The rumors before the draft sure, but since the draft they’ve added Knight. I don’t see them wanting to commit long term not knowing how long it will take Knight to be ready.
- nyrangers9479

Why? Knight is probably anywhere from 3-5 years away from being a full-time NHL'er and goaltending prospects are nearly impossible to project. He's every bit as likely to bust as he is to be a #1 goaltender.

You sign the talent when it's available (not often with goaltenders) and deal with the rest later. Putting all their eggs in one basket that's years away from being an NHL player is majorly-bad business.

I think in today's NHL we have seen you need 1A and 1B. The Blues don't win without Binnington. Ditto for the Pens and Murray. The Caps ultimately won with Holtby, but Grubauer saved them early in their run.

I think Bob has no competition years 1-2 and then it could be a 1A-B the rest of the way

Knight is going to Boston College, he could very well stay there for 4 years before signing

Yep, stay there for 4 years, refuse to sign with them then sign with the Rangers when he becomes a UFA. We have seen this game before

Yeah, not sure why everyone thinks Knight is a starter right away. Isn't he committed to college anyway?

I wonder who complains in a scenario where we both win the lottery without tanking and wind up with Spencer Knight

Bob to me makes zero sense. He wants 7 years and they just drafted Knight 13th......
- nyrangers9479

I agree, but the Panthers must have known that Luongo's game fell off last season due to his wear & tear from past recent seasons' injuries. So they have had Bobrovsky as their #1 replacement target since last season had ended.

I wouldn't sign Bobrovsky for 7 years, yet alone at over $10M annually. He could suddenly revert back to his earlier NHL days of inconsistent play with the Flyers who had given up on him. I would go with a stop gap, lower priced goalie for a two or three year term until Knight is ready to become their #1 starter. But since their owner gave GM Dale Tallon the right "to spend up to the cap ceiling" this off season, he has one initial goal in mind in first having the best chance of reaching the postseason, and possibly further.

If I didn't have a goalie I would certainly sign Bob and the last thought on my mind was what he did in that dumpster fire Philly

I can agree with the first statement. Those big goalie contracts don't usually end well. However, after winning two Vezinas and being consistently one of the top goalies in hockey, I think it's fair to say it's a huge stretch to think that he would evolve back to Flyers bob. Don't forget too part of the reason he was inconsistent there was because he had to split time with Bryz and was being jerked around a bit.

it's why all the people killing Montreal for the Subban trade were out of their minds a bit

this trade was always potential suicide for nashville

I would imagine he doesn't do that, but yeah totally possible. But to say that they shouldn't sign Bob is silly. If you split the difference on the years in my projection, Knight is playing in the NHL in 4 years and then has a 3 year ELC. That rides out all of Bob's deal before they need to pay Knight on his first RFA deal.

It's amazing how often people use the word "generational talent" these days. Apparently like 15% of the NHL are once in a generation talents

I also really don't think anyone who signs Bob is looking for him to be great the last 3 years of his contract. Its all about the first 3-4 years

i don't understand why Nashville is on the hook for all the penalty? Why doesn't the team who acquired him take any risk? Never understood that

I agree in that he is the best currently available. But I would not give him more than a 4 or 5 year deal, and at a maximum AAV of $7M to $8M.
Prior to the Ducks total collapse of last season, Gibson was extended long term at somewhere under $7M per season.

Edit: Gibson was extended at $6.4M annually, and has 8 more years remaining on his contract. But he is only 25 as compared to Bobrovsky being age 30.

Yeah, if you're banking on him to be dragging you to the Cup finals in the 6th year of his deal you're probably gonna have a bad time

It's because they're the ones who gave him the contract. I don't fully understand the cap recapture penalty rules either though.

it's not really going to happen often, just a few of those 13 year crazy contracts left, this was part of the penalty they made in the new CBA to get back at those teams who signed those crazy deals

Cap recapture is about preventing circumventing the cap. Actually, the first couple years, Montreal would have had a small penalty. I think in this scenario, it's kind of not fair, but there are always going to be outlier examples to every rule. I'd be more upset that this is subject to it, despite the fact it was signed before that rule was in the CBA.

Imagine if Nashville never matched that contract. That would have been pretty funny.
