it's not really going to happen often, just a few of those 13 year crazy contracts left, this was part of the penalty they made in the new CBA to get back at those teams who signed those crazy deals - jimbro83
Ah so its meant to just penalize teams for trying to circumvent the cap |

Cap recapture is about preventing circumventing the cap. Actually, the first couple years, Montreal would have had a small penalty. I think in this scenario, it's kind of not fair, but there are always going to be outlier examples to every rule. I'd be more upset that this is subject to it, despite the fact it was signed before that rule was in the CBA.
Imagine if Nashville never matched that contract. That would have been pretty funny. - 2sticks1puck

It's because they're the ones who gave him the contract. I don't fully understand the cap recapture penalty rules either though. - eichiefs9

the Rangers were going to sign him to that sheet too, Weber visited Philly and the Rangers and ultimately chose Philly, probably because Torts would have made him a 7 million dollar shot blocker |

i don't understand why Nashville is on the hook for all the penalty? Why doesn't the team who acquired him take any risk? Never understood that - TPC
You pay back the $$$ that the salary exceeded the cap hit. In Nashville’s case they were paying him $14m a year while his cap hit was $7m. If he doesn’t play out the contract, including the last 3 years for just $1m a season, Nashville is on the hook for the salary that exceeded the cumulative cap hit, all of it.
It’s actually a good contract for Montreal because if they buy it out later, all they owe is 2/3 the remaining salary over twice the remaining term. So they buy out the last three years they have 2 mil in dead cap space spread over 6 years. Nashville is will have like 8 mil per in dead cap space for three years. |

Lol, at least when he retired after that, we would have had like 9 years of a smaller recapture. Would have been done for sure 4-5 years ago after Torts thing.
That's the one thing that always sort of made no sense about recapture, how is Nashville penalized more if he retires closer to the contracts end date? In theory, those teams should have been signing guys to 30 year contracts. 20 years of a million penalty would be nothing |

Will teams take that into consideration you think. If I am Montreal why not buy out the last 3 years just to bone the Predators? May help you land a future free agent if Nashville had interest in them to |

It’s why I was so pissed about the Kovy punishment. These contracts existed, Kovys just went even further. But the NHL never said where the line was. Now everyone just dumps their dead bodies on Arizona. |

Now that it's done and past, it was a pretty BS penalty. At the time though my fandom made me nod in agreement with the league. |

They might. Or if a team like Ottawa can’t hit cap floor, Montreal could trade him there, he never wears a Senators Jersey, but they fill 7 mil in cap space for 1 mil in salary. Arizona did it for years.
If anything circumventing cap floor is more prevalent now than trying to get around the ceiling. |

the Hossa thing is ridiculous, guaranteed when they signed that they knew they would invent something, like allergies to jerseys
and of course Lungo retires when the actual salary got down to 1 mil |

It’s why I was ok with Kovy retiring one year into that deal. Devils are stuck with a quarter mil cap hit for 25 years. Had he of waited to the meat of that contract to retire that chart you put up about Nashville would be a reality for NJ. Dodged a huge bullet there. |

Well I mean look at the list of HOF Arizona Coyotes. Pronger, Datsyuk, Hossa. It’s laughable. |
