Agreed..

Dubas played the percentages, a draft pick late in the 1st rd, likely doesn't go on to be a superstar.. It was a move he had to make.. It didn't cost us a roster player or one of our better prospects. It's somewhat lottery protected, and there was no salary retained.

I doubt Carolina keeps the pick anyway, unless they're planning on trying to offer sheet somebody.

If the Canes (frank) Marleau they'll never get free agents again and nobody will trust their management team. Marleau is getting his money and going back to Cali

He already knew what the deal was. They're going to try to convince him to play there, but if he doesn't want to, they'll buy him out.

why?
- MaximusAurelius

In a nutshell, the league didn't want 35+ players signing multi-year contracts in which the later years were lesser amounts - it would be easy cap circumvention:

Year 1: $10 million

Year 2: $10 million

Year 3: $1 million

Cap hit: $ 7 million per season.

Dude retires after year two - doesn't care about the $1 million, everyone wins.

But the league doesn't have to worry about that on one year contracts, so they felt they didn't have to include the punishment clauses for them.

Me too.

So long as he still has his legs, he's an okay fit on the bottom line, and provides a steady hand and veteran voice for the team, especially if Williams decides to hang them up.

I wonder if it's a thing where he says "I want a cup" and makes a deal that at the deadline if he feels he can win one with say the blues then management facilitates the trade no matter what.

Man, Vegas has 2 first lines. No cap space but 2 first lines.

Where do they find cap space?! Reaves and Eakins are a must to go in my opinion.

I could see it. Sort of a "Look, if we're out of it, we promise we'll send you to a contender" sort of thing.

Wouldn't that be something? Now that we have an extra 1st rounder from you, we're gonna sign your young star to an offer sheet.

Yeah it works out for both parties in the end. However, I can also see just wanting to go back to SJ.

Two things:

1) Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the bonus would go on the cap - as cap hits are total/365.

2) I have seen absolutely nothing to say that a mutual termination of contract for a 35+ player would count against cap. I fully admit that I have no idea if it would work or not, but there's no way you can definitively say that it couldn't, as I'm assuming you haven't seen the actual rules, either, as the NHL hasn't ever disclosed them.

But getting back to my earlier post, it's all a moot point now.

- Atomic Wedgie

He makes 4.25 this year, after July!1st it will be 2.75, who would agree to terminate that?

I don't think that's true; look at Plekanec when he was 36y old; Bergevin said Habs wouldn't have any plekanec caphit after mutual termination

- MaximusAurelius

Never thought about that, think you're right. However a) Marleau had all the cards b) he probably wants his money c) he could just retire and (frank) the Leafs

All this is to say I think it's moot (mute)

I agree. My point was if they tried to not pay the money and "Dundon" it. But I agree...he'll get paid and go to Cali

I also heard Marner camp was willing to sign 9.5 last year.

This is starting to take shape to be uglier than Nylander.

He might want to see what others teams are out there for him. May see himself in a better situation on another team?

They have their own picks. It's just less of a punishment when you own an extra one.
