He might want to see what others teams are out there for him. May see himself in a better situation on another team? - walshyleafsfan
I bet Marner would sign an offer sheet and if it's like 12 million by 7. I honestly have a hard time saying yes to that. It would hurt so much to see a player like that walk away but...gah... you'd be removing Nylander/Kadri and likely not resigning Rielly to any type of deal. |

I also heard Marner camp was willing to sign 9.5 last year.
This is starting to take shape to be uglier than Nylander. - Aaron_85
9.5 x what tho?
if its 9.5 x 5 ..then I can see why that wasnt signed...assuming its true.
thats about what he should get now max |

Yeah I could see him signing an offer sheet.
If he meets with teams, i think the Leafs should look at trades with the teams of Mitch's choice. That team probably doesn't want to give up 4 picks and 12m cap hit. Might be an opportunity to get a player or two back with a 1st (or 2) |

This is a bad argument.
It depends on who is making the picks.
The Leafs, since 2012, have drafted Rielly, Gauthier, Nylander, Marner, Matthews, Liljegren and Sandin. Whether it's an early 1st or a late 1st, all those guys are going to be populating the Leafs lineup with the most recent ones on cheap contracts.
Kapanen was a 22nd overall pick. Gardiner was a 17th overall pick.
The Leafs had to do it but the 1st round pick is still a hefty price and always has value if you know how to use them properly.
Considering the Leafs are going to need ELC to fill the lineup going forward, 1st round picks are the best way to get that goal accomplished and should really avoid trading them. I'm not sure even moving a 1st for Muzzin was a good idea. - JohnFergusonJr
You can say you disagree with a point, but saying it is a bad argument, infers that you are speaking from facts - while it is just your opinion. I did do a little research in fact, I looked at every pick from #20 to the end of the first round in every draft from 1993 to 2013 - and the stats were consistent with about 3 to 5 picks being very good players in the NHL. Lots of crap as stated. |

so word floating around is that the Leafs offered 10m x 8 years?
FFs Eichel took that to stay in Buffalo
just sign Mitch - senstroll
Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous.
Leafs: OK, Mitch, we're willing to overpay you.
Marner camp: No. Overpay more, with less years!

I'm becoming more and more at peace with the idea of taking the 4 1st round picks, and using the money earmarked for Mitchy to sign a free agent.
I still doubt anyone gives him an offer sheet, though.
Dubas needs to get Kapanen and Johnsson to put pen to paper before Wednesday. Those guys will get offer sheets. |

Wouldn't that be something? Now that we have an extra 1st rounder from you, we're gonna sign your young star to an offer sheet. - BINGO!
That would suck.. I hate you so much right now and too think, I wanted our hands on your Pesce. |

right which is pretty standard for players in his realm. maximize the $$ for his next deal. Agents would push for that i am sure.

I would absolutely consider 4 1st round picks. I'd prefer a trade but I'm open to the picks. Either way they have to upgrade the defense. Mitch is probably the best way to go about that.
Agreed in Kapanen and Johnsson. Although strangely I don't think they'd sign an OS |

And that's exactly why it's a bad argument. Because you're looking at different (often bad) GMs who were making bad picks.
The point still stands, it depends who is making the picks. The recent 1st round picks by the Leafs have been very beneficial to the team and will continue to be a source of cheap talent while the Leafs are strapped for cap space. |

The odds of replacing a player as good as Marner with those four 1st round picks are pretty low.
And signing a replacement for Marner will cost almost the same amount but for a much older player who is less likely to improve as his contract ages.
The Leafs have 13 million in cap space (Horton LTIR) and while nobody wants the Leafs to pay that much to match an offersheet (don't think anybody would go that high anyway) the Leafs should just keep Marner and move other pieces to make it work in a worst case scenario. |

Your agruement is Trash, because you are making an assumption the the bad GM's from Toronto making bad picks are significantly lower in quality (more than two standard deviations) than the average or mean. Your arguement is baseless and as I mentioned Trash.

We can add that one to the list of things that Marner was clearly going to accept last year. Seriously. Go read through message threads. Here. On Sportsnet. On The Athletic. On anywhere online . . .
He was TOTALLY going to sign an 8 year deal for:
- $8 million
- $9 million
-$10 million
- $9.5 million
. . . but Dubas blew it and didn't sign him and now he's going to have to pay him so much more!
There was talk - by the media. There was no deal. Parameters were thrown around - by the media. There was never a deal. Marner's agent came on some shows and talked about parameters - but there was no deal. |

I think part of the argument is how far do they go with the stars and scrubs makeup? Or (obviously depends on the players) would the team be better equipped with 3 x 3.5m players as opposed to one 10.5mil player? |
