You said "if an offer sheet comes" as if Marner had already signed one.
Can they trade him still?
Like, for example, the Islanders give Marner what he wants and he signs it.
Can the Leafs trade him to Columbus and let them decide whether they match it or not? - JohnFergusonJr
If an offer sheet comes in, and Marner hasn't signed it yet, the Leafs can work out a deal, hopefully..

If McDavid signs a 12.5 x 8 deal, Matthews had better sign for 8 years at 11.5. |

In Matthews case, wasn't it being reported that he was using a percentage of the cap?
Not an actual dollar number? |

Ya I guess they could potentially trade his rights then that team could match the offer sheet. |

Maybe. Don't really care. Either way, the fact the club was willing to go to within a million of the best player in the world and he wasn't signing for 8 years on that deal is pretty sad. McDavid gave Edmonton 8 years, even with how many issues they have. Matthews signed for 5 when he is on a good team. |

i still don't see an offer sheet coming. it's all empty threats / marner's agent pretending to speak for other teams.
I just don't think there is a team out there:
i) with +$10M in cap space
ii) with a stocked up prospect pool (so they can sacrifice 4 1sts)
iii) flush with cash so they can pay $12M bonus this july; and
iv) that is a marner away from being a SC contender.

I agree. I can't see anywhere where it says that a player having received an offer sheet may not be traded.
There are two periods I see: (1) If the team matches the offer sheet, the player may not be traded for a full calendar year; (2) A player who has filed for, and is pending arbitration may not be traded until after the hearing.
A player who is pending arbitration can still receive an offer sheet, which is a little unusual. |

I don't see Marner signing an offer sheet, but I don't doubt that one or more, will be sent his way. |

The thinking is/was, a team offers a contract to Marner..
Dubas then tells Marner, that if he really wants to accept the offer to hold off on signing it.
Then Dubas works out a trade with that team. If they work out a deal, Marner is traded for players/picks. If not, Marner can sign the offer sheet (assuming he wants to) and the Leafs get the draft picks. |

Sorry. I missed that context. Absolutely. That absolutely can happen, since it's basically what happened with Kessel. |

You could also include another team as well.
Team 1 offer sheets (Dubas tells marner to hold off while they discuss it)
Team 2 Toronto tells them the offer sheet details and if they are willing to match. They then trade for marner and then when marner signs that offer sheet they match and get Marner.
Long shot but they could leverage it like that if there is more then 1 team interested. |

Wasn't it Burke that didn't want to give him an offer sheet, even though it would have been a 1st, 2nd and a 3rd instead of two 1sts and a 2nd?
It also assumes the Leafs know what Marner's agent is doing. If they sign an offer sheet, can he still be traded during the period they have to match? |

I don't see it happening either. But things have definitely soured when you see dubs switch his tune. Up to this point he has always defended the players and their being part of the future, to a fault really. Then he comes out and says he won't match. He did not meet with Ferris who was at the draft, which isn't altogether unheard of but is very unusual.
If no one offer sheets, this will be Nylander part 2. Except this time no Dermott, no Hymen, no real way to augment without knowing what's going on. It may come down to trading him in the end, because they can't have Marner sitting, period. |

Anyone buying this poop?
On 31 Thoughts, Elliot Friedman said Marner felt hurt by Dubas' "not matching any offer sheet" comments. Chris Johnston says that this is about respect, about rookie bonuses, and not getting enough ice time.. |
|
|
|
If I'm Dubas, I'd rather make a trade for Marner instead of 4 1st round picks.
But really - I'd rather trade away Nylander and Kadri than Marner (their combined salary is similar to Marner's new salary caphit and their combined return is close to 4 1st rounder as well (either in picks or player value)).
Better to keep 1 1st line player than 2 2nd liners imo.

If this is true, anyone getting hurt about offers in the $10 million per year neighbourhood needs to man up and grow a pair.

They can't if he signs it.. They have 7 days to match it, I think? |
