Carolina just dumped salary.
Likely to go after some UFA's.
But I wouldn't be surprised if it had something to do with Willie or Mitch. - Santo_44
Maybe. I'm hoping a trade can be worked out somehow. |

Yeah, the Leafs are so close to the cap but lets have Matthews at a higher cap hit.
That would fix all of our worries right now. - Santo_44
Jesus.

You're 100% right.
Should have been 8 years.
If the Leafs can't win a Cup in the next 3 years, they're going to have to seriously consider moving Matthews in year 4. - JohnFergusonJr
For that price, yes it should have.
Or it should have been 500 -750k less per for 5 years.
But it is what it is. |

Didn't know Aho was going to cost 25 million. - Santo_44
more.
Someone is going to sign him for 26.5 million and the compensation is 27 first rounders.
(Carolina has a well-publicized internal cap that is well below the ceiling) |

So in your opinion, there is absolutely zero incentive for Marner to be reasonable? - PatC80
Neither side has an incentive to start a negotiation by being nice to the other side.
If two sides were capable of being nice and reasonable from the beginning, there wouldn't have been two lockouts in the past 15 years. |

Tampa Bay discount.
If Kucherov wanted to leave, he'd get McDavid money with his hardware.
He signed a long term deal that prevented him from becoming a UFA before he got the hardware and now gets less than if he had waited.
Agents saw this, learned from it and are adapting. - JohnFergusonJr
Sound logic.. Make me the highest paid winger now, because I may become the best winger in the game later? |

Not only that, they want a shorter term so they can renegotiate and not fall behind when the cap escalates.

Not about being nice, just reasonable. If Marner wants and gets $11M+ per year, it'll be with a different team. |

It's better to be the highest paid winger in the league, twice.. I guess. |

Remember what I said? What you do way too much?
this.
Something happens once or twice and its the norm for you.
Cool. JT left.
Crosby, Malkin, Toews, Kopitar, Stamkos, Doughty, OEL, Price, Benn, Seguin, Ovi, Backstrom, Bergeron, Giroux...you know what just look at the top 50 players in the NHL and tell me how many left in FA in their PRIME.

How many won Cups and stayed because they knew they could win?
How many got (over) paid what they were worth so they stayed?
How many didn't win, didn't get (over) paid and stayed? |

We don't know if the Leafs are being reasonable.
Leafs fans are also inclined to side with the team because they'd rather everybody play for as little as possible.
If another team offers 11 AAV, the Leafs would be pretty stupid to let him walk. Trade Brown, suck it up for a year, get Nylander's value up as high as possible, move him instead and move on. |

Yeah because it will only affect them for a year. |

Most likely, yeah because the cap will go up again and eventually a new TV deal will come in and the cap will go up again. Plenty of other guys they could trade to clear space, just a matter of getting their value back up to normal, like Nylander. |

I get it, I like Marner too. We can't have him at $11M. It's not gonna help us, It's gonna hurt us. Your idea of trading Nylander is a bit off base. How do we develop his value and then proceed to trade him as a cap dump. |

They stayed because they won a Cup or because they were overpaid to stay.
Crosby, Malkin, Toews, Kane, Doughty; these are guys that won Cups.
Carey Price got overpaid to stay.
Tavares got neither, so he left.
With Matthews, if the Leafs can't win a Cup, he will test the UFA market. He's not going to stick around for no reason. That was the point. If it took an over payment to get him to stay 8 years, it would have been worth it because it gives the Leafs more time to win. |
