This rebuild has taken a very strange direction. The Leafs find themselves (using this superstars and scrubs format they have), not actually having many players that they can/want to trade away to improve their back end.

With the lack of next year's (and this year's) 1st round pick, it'll be interesting to see whether or not the Leafs can actually get round to upgrading their defense sufficiently enough to truly compete, before Matthews, Nylander, Tavares and Marner are out of contract.

I personally feel (only in my opinion) that the rebuild has gotten offtrack and will require some really hard work to get it back on the tracks.

Hopefully they do.

Trade Nylander and Zaitsev to MIN for Staal and Dumba.

Apparently numbers agreed to, not filed yet, maybe waiting for Ferris come around.

I would just sign them. Mitch is obviously taking his time.

Not sure if the Wild would do it, but it might be a good move for the Leafs.

The rebuild needs to be rebuilt, it’s getting way off track due to poor management

I believe they are past the rebuild stage
Not too many rebuild teams have a potential 3 x 10 m per players

Yeah it does seem to have gone a bit funky. As far as i can tell our LW's are Johnsson, Hyman, Moore and Marchment. And our RHD are Zaitsev, Holl and one of us.

Not too sure what happened to be honest.

Oh God i hope not. I hope there's more building to be done. If not, we're up poop creek.

This is what happens when management treats the employees as friends. I think things started trending down when he caved to Nylander and gave him a no trade guarantee. It set a precedent. Too soft.

Well get your paddle.
No 1st this year, none next year.
No cap room.
A couple of young D to come up.
But what you see if what you get possibly for the forseeable future.

Idk about that. Championship teams require refinement these days. Look at the Caps and Blues, the past two Cup winners. They tinkered for years without rebuilding trying to get the mix right. Before that, the Pens did the same thing. I think that's where we are now. Its going to require some good management, thats for sure. Where there is room for further 'building', is in the development of Liligren and Sandin. The extent to which they develop is going to be a significant factor. I also, oddly, find myself in agreement with Ek on this point - Nylander needs to be traded to upgrade the back end, for both salary cap reasons, and to balance out this lineup.

It was foolish for him to say that for sure.
But we all know, GM's say one thing and then do another when push comes to shove.
Growing pains of a GM with not much NHL experience.

I actually think Nylander's deal is fine. 6.9mil for him is very fair i would say. I think they have to pick which two of Matthews, Tavares and Marner they want to keep. And trade the other one for defensive help (both a dman, and a defensive forward). Not sure who without looking.

Out of curiosity, why not deal Nylander? To me, he is the logical one to go.

imo that's cool for the Arizona franchise.
not for the Leafs though..

i'm surprised by the 'Willie will not get traded' comments vs the 'we cannot do anything until Marner situation gets solved' - seems a strong bias in favor of Nylander vs Marner.

to me as well.
you keep the three best and you keep good role players on good contracts (hyman, brown, the guys still on 1st contracts).
all the rest of the fw group (nylander - kadri - kapanen - johnsson etc.) unfortunately are possible cap victims - needed to improve the defense.

Leafs aren't trading Marner
Leafs aren't giving him 11
Leafs hold the cards
Dubas seems weak

So who knows

Yeah i don't mind seeing Nylander go for defensive help. I just think that one of the other three (to be honest, I'm meaning Marner as I don't want to trade away the centres) will a) be able to fetch back more that the Leafs really need and b) provide potential for more cap savings and even the addition of picks/prospects.

So for example, and I'm just spitballing. Nylander for Pesce and we are right up against the cap with Pesce, Zaitsev and Holl/Lillybust on the right.

Or Marner for Pesce/Hamilton, Necas and our 1st back. Maybe add more from us.

More help and more cap space, although giving up the best player.

No, they probably couldn't. I don't like the idea of trading for top defensemen. Usually involves an overpayment. A decent RHD is all thats required, or did Rielly not do enough to show he's the top d-man on this team? Curious what Vegas wants for Collin Miller, heard hes available.

A "top" defenseman, no. An upgrade, yes. If the upgrade is not near what you see as equal value, I think you wait on it, improve Nylander's value, and try to make a deal in season. My point is, I think Nylander is the chip.

could make a deal around Nylander for Lindholm.
Makes sense for both teams imo.
