gorton was smart to go after trouba. a late1st plus a poopty dman was a huge underpayment.

gorton is no dummy. he won't overpay with 4 1sts for marner when his defence is tourba and a bunch of scrubs and with a 37 year-old goalie.

- Tumbleweed

you realize they have got two of the best goalie prospects in the league? both will be able to play nhl minutes coming season.
trouba + skjei + deangelo + shattenkirk isn't bad on d.
up front they have kakko now joining them + kravtsov and they have a few other decent c-men (anderson and zibanejad) + will probably get good trade value back for kreider. if zuccharello signs with dallas, they'll have another 1st rounder for next year , so they could afford the picks.

and it's the nyr - great original 6 team.

The Rask pick came after the one year lockout and combined two years into one draft. If you wanted to split the difference, it would have averaged out as a 10th or 11th pick.

If he views Trouba as trade capital, then I'll agree it's a savvy move because he should receive more on return than he gave up. All I'm saying is that where the Rangers are right now, they have further down to go before they come back up, or else they will float in that nebulous 14 - 22 space until they finally commit to rebuilding.
- Monkeypunk

Rangers will surprise this year. The guy they got in the draft is really good, they will be in much better shape when Lunqvist's deal expires. I guess they would be pretty happy if someone offer sheeted Trouba.

Marner > Kadri + Nylander.

If Dubas lets Marner go, he's done before the end of the calender year.

- MaximusAurelius

You're doing the math wrong.

On one side of the ledger, there's Marner.

On the other side, there's Kadri + Nylander + 4 1st round picks

it's Marner or picks/players in return for Kadri & Nylander
vs
Kadri + Nylander + 4 1sts

I'm saying that the value for Kadri and Nylander back will be quite close to the 4 1sts.

I get Georgiev is pretty decent, but who is the other one? Shesterkin? Halverson? I don't think they're quite NHL goalies yet. At least not starters.

I think you're overvaluing some of those players, but time will tell. Kakko looks like the real deal, obviously. Andersson was highly touted, but hasn't really delivered on anything yet.

Yes and no. Marner camp was pretty upset when the Leafs told them they weren't giving anyone max rookie bonus money, only to turn around 2 days later and give it to Matthews.

Not the best way to handle a situation. Plus, your the rich Leafs, just give the guy the bonus, i mean really.

- aminnes

That was Lou.

This is Dubas.

You know who else didn’t give him a bonus? Every other team in the league.

lol. their defense is terrible.

but i did forget about the fact that all of their prospects are sure fire nhl'ers. that changes everything....except that they won't have $12M after they sign trouba.

This is the compensation to avoid 4 1st round picks, I would the Leafs match at that point. It will take a 4x1st round picks offer to get him signed

Honestly, if I'm Marner and I don't receive a 10.5AAV 5y deal from Dubas, I'd look at 12mln AAV/6 year deals with NYR / MTL / NYI.
Then in 6 years when Matthews has left the Leafs, McDavid is with Leafs and Dubas is long gone - I'd think about joining the Leafs to win a few cups - 27y is still a good age.

- MaximusAurelius

you do know that the cap going down to $81.5 made a $12m offer sheet less likely not more, right?

Anyone buying this poop?

On 31 Thoughts, Elliot Friedman said Marner felt hurt by Dubas' "not matching any offer sheet" comments. Chris Johnston says that this is about respect, about rookie bonuses, and not getting enough ice time..

- PatC80

Not even a little. I have been lead to believe by leaks from both sides to the media that this is a business decision...a collectively bargained right of the player...which would mean that the same collective bargaining enables a team to forgo matching an offer sheet based on the compensation offered for the player choosing to sign it.

We'd all justifiably laugh if Dubas was quoted saying his feelings were hurt that Marner wants to visit other markets on an RFA tour. This is a joke.

And if Marner does indeed go visiting, trade his ass. Or sit tight and take the 4 firsts. Either way - you ain't playing with Tavares elsewhere, and you aren't getting iPhone commercials playing in Carolina.

They could. Look. I'm not going to say that I know anything for certain, but I don't really like Shattenkirk and I have eyes, so I also don't like Staal. I've never much cared for Smith and I am in the minority here, but I don't think that highly of Skjei.

Krieder is good and Zibanejad was good, too. Strome was way better as a Ranger, but he's still not that good. I don't know. Kakko will be good. He looks good.

I also think that a team plays as well as its goaltending allows. Lundqvist's last few years have seen his GAA go from 2.25 to 2.48 to 2.74 to 2.98 to 3.07. Obviously it's time to lighten the load on the King and play Georgiev more. Hopefully as a 23 year old, he doesn't Matt Murray the bed.

best way for Dubas to get his Leafs GM career cut short is to trade Marner or take 4 1sts in an offersheet compensation.

True. Unless he's sees it as the club itself, or Shanahan. I think it was less about the bonus and more about being lied to.

So you're in favour of caving to his contract demands regardless of the cost? Because that's the alternative.

You could build a pretty nice D and replenish some offense in short order with $11M in cap space next year and 7 first round picks over the next 4 years...

For the record, I'm not in favour of losing Marner either...but losing a guy and not giving in to unwarranted contract demands are two different things.

C and 1D get paid more than wingers. NHL fact. His 3rd year stats were inflated based on his previous years output by Tavares (who no doubt also benefited from Marner), he's not the best winger in the league and by no objective comparable should be paid like it from a % of the cap perspective. Ian Tulloch has an excellent analysis in the Athletic on this.

You said "if an offer sheet comes" as if Marner had already signed one.

Can they trade him still?

Like, for example, the Islanders give Marner what he wants and he signs it.

Can the Leafs trade him to Columbus and let them decide whether they match it or not?

I would argue that the stats go both ways. JT had his career year playing with one of the best playmakers in the league.

It works in all accounts for me. 4 firsts? Check! Dubas fired? Check!
