True. Unless he's sees it as the club itself, or Shanahan. I think it was less about the bonus and more about being lied to.
- aminnes

I doubt he was every lied to.......

You are assuming this. Lou seems very well respected around the league.

Matthews was a #1 pick. He wasn’t about to be the 1st #1 pick to not get bonuses.

I would argue that the stats go both ways. JT had his career year playing with one of the best playmakers in the league.

Why would the Marner camp make that up? For fun?

He bagged a lot more goals. Marner is second in the league in primary assists. I would say that means he is a premier playmaker in the league.

Tough shyte, you can only offer sheet with your own picks.
- bobbyisno1

They have their own picks.

This just helps make them more expendable.

best way for Dubas to get his Leafs GM career cut short is to trade Marner or take 4 1sts in an offersheet compensation.
- MaximusAurelius

Best way for Marner to not be a Leaf anymore is continue to turn down contracts that overpay him.

Can't imagine you'd get many takers trading a guy signed to an offer sheet...good info on Capfriendly.

marner signed in july 2015

matthews signed in july 2016

marner got ~$800k in performance bonuses potential.

matthews got ~$800k + $2M for being a top 10 goal scorer.

marner's camp are a bunch of whiny female doges if they are complaining about not getting performance bonuses marner would never have achieved.

You wouldn't, but it would be a great classic Richard move.

The rule isn't laid out clearly anywhere. It seems a little unusual that it would happen . . .but two clubs submit offer sheets to a player, and he signs with Club 'A', so you call Club 'B' and make a deal for him that perhaps contains players and picks that are more to your liking. Club 'B' would then have to match. If they didn't Club 'B' would receive the 4 1sts!

But it doesn't say he can't be traded within that 7 days and up to the new team to accept or decline the offer sheet. That might be a loophole nobody has discovered yet.

Maybe there's a team that wants Marner or those four 1st round picks.

Or maybe a young player in his 3rd year was able to simply improve.
It helped that he finally played with a star player

So if we're back to talking about how goals are so important, then we're saying Marner shouldn't earn as much. But Marner gets assists which are just as important as goals, so the variation in points in Tavares' game is maybe not directly attributable to Marner since it was only 2 which means that Marner shouldn't earn as much.

But if we're just making conversation. Sup?

With the open nets Bozak use to miss, the fact that he got 60 points, should count as 80 point seasons.

Marner is proving to be far worst than Nylander in character. Trade Marner and make Nylander captain!

"A" Bonuses are worth $212,500 each, to a maximum of $850,000 (maximum 4 achieved). They are achieved by each of:
-20 goals
-35 assists
-60 points
-Top six in Time on Ice among forwards on team (minimum 42 games)
-Top six in +/- among forwards on team (minimum 42 games)
-0.73 points per game (minimum 42 games)

The club put him on the 4th line. I think that is why the bonuses matter.

The interesting part is many Leaf fans will bemoan the fact that Nylander doesn't get to play with Matthews as a reason for his decline, but then do not afford Marner the same respect in that he achieved what he achieved playing with Tavares.

lol. yeah, babcock was out to get marner. that's why he's been 3rd or 4th in pp time.

maybe it has due to with rookies needing to earn ice time as opposed to gifted 1st line time?

I am largely kidding. I do think that they benefitted from one another. Without Tavares, Marner likely doesn't break 90 point mark, and without Marner, Tavares likely doesn't break 40 goals for the first time in his career.

In terms of what he's worth? That's hard to say. I still think hovering around the 10 mark is probably good territory based on winger comparables; over 6 years makes it a higher lifetime earning potential contract and he's still very young when it expires.
