What report? The opposite is what has been said; he doesn't want 8 years.

Odds are he wants 11.6 x 5.

- JohnFergusonJr

If it turns out that that is what he wants, then that's even more ridiculous.

They can.

Just not all of them.

I wish our stars sucked ass and/or were mediocre and signed binding deals to make them look great 3 years later.

13x7 compared to 11x7 would be close to 14mil no?
- Puck-us-all

Depends who you believe.

Also depends on how that cash would have been paid out.

Leafs put a lot of it upfront.

Sharks might not have done that.

Up front or not it’s still turning down a (frank) ton of money .. which never happens right?

Hayes brought up a great point.

Marner can’t use Matthews comparable with the rest of the league.

It's not ridiculous because A) he's worth it and B) that's how negotiation works. Both sides start at one number and settle somewhere in the middle.

Should have put them all in the AHL for 1 year and tanked it one more time and stretch that ELC out one more year.

Would have won the Calder Cup a lot earlier too.

Not really because if he gets enough of that money up front he can manage it in a certain to keep more of it and start to profit off it immediately by investing it.

I am not even sure I believe Friedman and this whole idea of Marner being upset.

How can say they will talk to teams about offersheets and then turn around and be upset when Dubas says the Leafs might not match.

Anyway, I am sure most of this is not Marner. It is Ferris and his dad. At some point Marner himself is going to have to put them in their place.

Also, they may think Dubas is a soft touch and will cave. I firmly believe at this point that Shanahan has a say in this and I don't think he is quite so soft. This is why I don't believe Dubas' job is on the line over this. He will be backed by Shanahan over something this significant.

The Leafs can’t afford Marner at 11.

No contending team should sign him to that much. Overpaying is a bad idea and I believe dubas would trade him if it really came to it.

Agreed. Marner should not get the same deal as Matthews. If he does, it's a fail on Dubas.

Leafs should be starting at $6 million, then. If the sides want to be ridiculous in negotiations.

Work their way into each other and get actual fair value there.

A) but he's not.
B) start at a reasonable number and don't threaten to sign an offer sheet
