I get it, I like Marner too. We can't have him at $11M. It's not gonna help us, It's gonna hurt us. Your idea of trading Nylander is a bit off base. How do we develop his value and then proceed to trade him as a cap dump.
- PatC80

They can afford him if they dump Brown. If they can trade a 1st to dump Marleau, they can afford to dump Brown to keep Marner. And that's only a worst case scenario.

Nylander's value can be recovered with a good season. And if he's traded, it's not necessarily a cap dump. It could be for young, cheap players. So the value is still there just not against the cap.

We'll be fine as long as the cap goes up to $112M next year.

Dump Brown? His $2.1M cap hit will save us. Nylander's value will go up, his cap hit is not the issue. Just so I understand, we build up his value and trade him for a 1st rd pick?

All this subjective bullsh1t for 30 fcuking pages. Jesus, you're all like a bunch of nattering old women thinking they have some type of clue as to the inner workings of a NHL team and a NHL Agency during the negotiation of a star player.

Marner's team and the Maple Leafs management are negotiating a new deal. That's the ONLY fact anyone knows...on these boards or on TSN. END OF STORY.

Nobody knows term or Cap or how much of a douche his dad is or how trailer park his mom is....quit with the guessing and then spewing that bullsh1t like it's fact.

FFS. It's not even our money. WGAF if he wants a gazillion. Management will make a decision and that will be it. Marner is a Leaf or he's not.

Can we go back to boob GIFs for a few days???

If moving his cap hit opens up money for Marner, it works.

His cap hit is an issue when he produces as poorly as he did last year.

Trade him for good, young, cheap players.

Side note; Elliotte Friedman also said teams are telling him that if some team does offersheet Marner and TOR doesn't match, they're terrified of what TOR might do with extra cap space, picks, and a vengeance.

Those good young cheap players have to be paid as well, no? Marner at $11M hurts us for more than 1 year.

Leafs can’t offer sheet anyone so that’s off the table. Interesting though

An ELC is cheap for 3 years.

And the cap goes up every year with the US TV deal is coming up soon.

Marner at 11 AAV doesn't hurt any more or less than Matthews and Tavares.

And as Tavares ages, you're going to want a guy like Marner passing him the puck.

A quality UFA out there would cost the same to replace him.

Your plan could work if the cap goes up to $159M in 2 years.

Don't need 1sts for offer sheets.

Best players to offer sheet only cost a 2nd or 3rd.

Most likely, yeah because the cap will go up again and eventually a new TV deal will come in and the cap will go up again. Plenty of other guys they could trade to clear space, just a matter of getting their value back up to normal, like Nylander.
- JohnFergusonJr

Players are sick of 10%ish escrow.

So the cap is already over inflated by about that. Plus, a drop in the cad exchange rate would wipe out a u.s. tv deal increase.

Could be several years of $2m increases on the horizon.
