Pavelski visited Tampa, not Thornton.
- SABRES 89

I’m sorry I thought I read Thornton did.

Either way. Maybe I just assumes it was Thornton.

Either way. They sign for less to chase the cup.

It’s just aggravating because Pavelski would be a dynamite fit for 2-3 years.

But there’s absolutely 0.00% chance he considered the Sabres unless we offer a ton of $ and term. Even then.

I think when this team surprises some this year and Krueger laments himself as a coach guys want to play for, then those types might be interested

Yeap. Unless the Sabres pay him 9 per for two years he is not coming here because the team has been absolute dog poop.

Then you don’t sign dumb deals. Let all the other teams do it. When they can’t pay anyone else you can scoop up the remaining players on FA cheap.

Cap is fine. The superstars will get paid. It hurts the 4th line players. Teams will just not sign them for 2 million and pay their rookie 800k instead.

The teams that will suffer are the teams who pay okposo 6 million or Myers 7 million (reported).

An article I read on TSN said that one of the problems the NHLPA has is that guys are getting pushed out of the league earlier due to cost and the need to go younger/cheaper. The dumb deals are what’s doing that but how do you make GMs not give them out? I don’t think you can.

It's the crooked part of every union. They protect the older guys at the expense of the younger guys. It's always possible that they'd do something to ELC's or RFA's to benefit the older guys.

IMO a lockout/stoppage is inevitable
- ImThatGuy

What is the end game of a lockout though? Saying a contract can only have a max AAV of certain dollar amount? Something else? If there is always a GM that will give out a ridiculous contract then the only way to stop it is saying they can’t give those out.

Is it ridiculous or is that “the going rate”

It’s not like you have 10 GMs saying oh we will give you 2-3 mil and the. One comes along and hands out 8.

Eventually these contracts will stop imo as the top guys will get the money and the middle guys will gets phased out.

That’s what the PA will have an issue with imo.

That's the cost of losing.

That would go for any franchise, in any sport.

Or is the going rate ridiculous? I have no idea. I think a part of the problem is that one GM can set the rate. If team x gives player y a dump truck full of money then every other player close to player y thinks they deserve the same dump truck.

You mean like Botts giving a$7.5-$8M player 8 years and $72M ?

Every time there is a lockout the fans and players are punished with no hockey until rules are agreed upon to keep GM's from doing stupid crap. And then as soon as the new CBA is signed, they start thinking about how they can workaround the rules to go back to doing stupid crap.

Would of saved the last 4 pages of crying about overinflated contracts. Our GM is the one that rocked the boat. Heck even Tavares only got 7 years.

Pretty sure that McPhee "rocked the boat" back at the trade deadline

Someone get's it, Stone set the market and Skinner's agent ran with it all the way to the end of the race and then some.

Hayes isn't worth 7.5 a year either but it's the going rate. Sabres had no choice. JT could only get 7

Kane?

When it's good here, it's great. Players from both pro sports here know it. The ones who are here recognize that, and the ones who jump aboard will realize it.

It's been bad - really bad - for the Sabres. But someday, hopefully not too far away, the right group of guys will click here, and it'll be like 10 years ago. We've supported these teams through a lot of lean years. When it comes together, there won't be a better place to be

Yepper.

I think Stone is a more complete player, but for someone who's never scored 30 goals in, what, 10 NHL seasons, that contract (frank)ed every team in the league.

People need to stop blaming Botts for what Skinner got.
