He’d be a stop gap guy.
- dadeadhead

and a good one at that

He won't be a ppg player but he would be a good 50 point guy

Should also be able to get him relatively cheap if he would waive here

Vegas is in cap trouble

He has 2 years left at $6.5 million

He would have to waive his NTC to come here

He signed as a UFA last year. Would be very surprised if he wants to move on.

In regards to the question of the day, I would much rather go for Duchenne than Malkin. Malkin will be 33 at the start of the season and is coming off a season where he was a -25 while getting 64% Ozone starts. He also had a 45% faceoff percentage (which is actually his best % in 6 years) and half his points are on the PP.
In contrast Duchenne is 5 years younger and signing him for 7 years will put him at 35, which will be younger than Malkin will be in the 3rd year of his remaining contract. His faceoff percentage has been steadily around 55%. He's coming off a 31 goal 70 point season playing 73 games. He also added 5g and 5a in 10 playoff games. Also, out of the 31 goals, 25 came at even strength. With Ottawa he was also relied on more defensively getting close to 50/50 zone starts.
If you can get Duchenne for $10m a year, then I think that would serve the team better than giving up assets for an older, declining center.
Duchenne at 10 and Dzingel at 7 is better than Malkin at 9.5 and Kessel at 6.8. That's just my opinion though.
Regardless, Malkin's NMC most likely makes this conversation pointless.

I will say this about Duchene

He will be closer to the 55-60 point player he was prior to this season being the 2C here

Malkin is a ppg player as Pittsburgh's 2C

Duchene is the best option for 2nd line center however the cost will be very high.

Botterill already said Skinner was their big FA signing. They're not going to make a competitive offer for Duchene imo

Duchene fits better, Malkin is better for the Pens or a team that is playoff bound. Duchene is still young enough for what we are trying to accomplish.

.@renlavoietva: I do believe Myers will be a 7 year contract. it could be $8 million per season. $6 million might be a bit low. GM's are looking at the cap being lower and demand for young players - could be less money spent in FA but there's a lot of demand for defensemen.

Once the first wave of UFA's sign, it seems like there's no $ left for anyone else. Might open some options.

Vancouver seems to be making weird decisions lately.

Though I'm not super thrilled they traded for J.T. Miller. Not saying the Sabres had a chance on him, but still unfortunate.

Solid post. You bring up many good facts to substantiate your preference.
I agree with you preference.

Now the question is, would you want him for 7 × $10/$10.5 though.
Also, I heard on the radio that the Preds are projected of offer $10 per...so Sabres likely need to beat that fairly substantially.
I wouldn't do it myself.
Hopefully they can find a cheaper option I. Tier 2 as a stop gap

I will be curious to see how it shakes out. Will teams be more cautious, or will there still be the normal major activity on the big names?

Duchene, Panarin, Bobrovsky, Nyquist, and Zuccerello all would likely be locks to sign on the 1st, right?

Maybe this off season we can send Bogo, Scandella, Okposo, Girgs, Lockport Larry and Kim Pegula to the Dominican Republic for a little "vacation".

Drinks are on me!
