Not really, the current system has a 3 year ELC, followed by 4 years of RFA, followed by UFA. That suggestion eliminates RFA completely by adding 2 years to ELC and 2 to UFA. Teams would benefit because when they draft a player they are hard cost controlled for 5 years, instead of 3. Players would benefit as they become unrestricted free agents as early as 23 years of age. Big or small market is irrelevant, as there is a salary cap. - The Shrike
How is your math ending up with this benefiting teams with players on ELC's? It takes what is 7 years of team control and makes it 5, plain and simple.
Sure, it gives them a cheaper cost controlled player for two more years but what's currently happening with Marner is a fraction of a percent of what usually happens with players coming off their ELC. There's nothing to fix, the system is fine. |

Team control is effectively 3 years (+ slide) now, that's the new reality. |

It was in response to the top 2+prospect return. You can leave Kevin Hayes out of it. |

That's not true at all. The issue with Marner isn't over AAV, it's about term. He wants to be a UFA while he's still in his prime and what's the problem with that, other than that teams want to lock these guys up for as long as possible for their own benefit? |

any offer sheet over 10 million isnt even worth discussing in this reality, even in epicly elite RFA class 4 1sts couldnt ever be justified for one player. any GM who did this would do so knowing he would never have to live through the decade long repurcussion for the franchise. |

Offer sheet Marner $10,568,589 x 5 years and the compensation is two 1sts a 2nd and a 3rd. Lots of teams would pay that price.
Marner would be a UFA at age 27 and get to cash in again so i think he would take that deal.
The Leafs would have to swallow hard on that as I don't see how they could pay Marner 10,568,589, Kapanen, Johnnson, three other forwards plus 2 more D men with $3,000,000.

The offer sheet rules are a laugh. Ditch the draft and let players come in as FA. |

Agreed and Marner would love to stay in Toronto on a 5 year deal but how do they fill the rest of the roster if they give MM 10,500,000 per? |
