Based off a few things, it seems like either he or his agent had a hand in not being in Bako enough. Tough to say from the outside. Certainly a good deal of blame for the Oilers, as well- especially Hitchfemale genitalia for stepping in saying "lEt Me FiX hIm; i'Ll FiX hIm" and then playing him the same as Todd. - MaximumBone
NHL franchises shouldn't let 18 year olds call the shots with respect to their development (c.f., Drouin).

I wanted Puljujarvi |

We would have ruined him by playing him on the first pairing from day 1 too - Ihatebrianburke
Don't agree. This team seems to do fine developing D slowly. |

Should have traded him as soon as he and his agent opened their mouths. Just like Yak. |

Definitely not, but a #4 overall pick might feel like he has some leverage to force his team to play him in the NHL. Don't know, though. |

What about Khaira? He is not a top 6 guy at all, but adds depth to the bottom 6... |

I don't think we have the cap space to make that deal as adding him would negate our ability to add someone better in UFA. - MaximumBone
Yeah, I dunno. Just what I’ve been reading. |

Schultz, Justin - Ihatebrianburke
He was also 21 or 22 when he joined the league. Nurse at 20, Klefbom at 21. |

I had a similar thought as well. If JP was being a POS about the development path and an AHL assignment then they should have tried to get a better return for him at an earlier point imo. |

That doesn’t mean he should’ve been thrown to the wolves either though |

Jeff Carter and Ilya Kovalchuk for Milan Lucic, Kris Russel, Edmonton's 2020 1st round pick (not lottery protected), and a 2021 2nd.
Solves your 3C and top six wing issue, at least in the short term while dumping 2 bad contracts. Kings could retain salary on Kovalchuk's contract to make the cap hits equal. - tkecanuck341

Sure, but this is a business of winning. It can't be argued that he was one of our top Dmen upon stepping in. It was Petry, him and then a whole lot of nothing until Klefbom stepped in. |

Haha I think most people were happy enough with that pick when it was first made. - RonPielep
I think most people were surprised that he fell to us. I know I hadn't done anything in the way of due diligence on him because I, like most of the world, was under the impression that the top-3 were set. |

Do you view such a swap as fair? - Wildschwein
I think it's closer than I would like, but in terms of pure talent Carolina comes out ahead.
Gauthier struggled to adapt to the pro game and the Vellucci was really hard on him year 1. He came back, worked hard at it and made the appropriate adjustments in year 2 and really managed to turn a corner mid season. It took a while but he's back on track and was going to be pushing for a roster spot this offseason. |

I was uncertain about his ceiling but just based on his raw tools I was confident his floor would still be a quality third liner.

Playing with Aho and Laine seems to have hidden the warts in his game/personality. |

Hmmm. Well maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad trade after all.
I mean, I don’t really like the idea, and it seems neither do you. So it’s probably more or less fair. |

I remember in the following summer I went back and watched some of the game tape of his time at the WJC with Aho and Laine and I posted something along the lines of "Man, it's clear who was being carried by who in that tournament. I understand the reservations that Jarmo must've had about him" and was met with a less than enthused response. A lot of people weren't keen on hearing it and, while I was also still in denial myself, I had the feeling he was doomed from then on. |
