Until Mitch himself actually signs his contract or an offer sheet,, this is all about his agent ( and maybe his Dad) exploiting the media for maximum contract exposure, value and resulting agent commission.

Until then, this isn't about Mitch himself, and fans should not turn on him.

(frank) his agent, Dreger, and anyone else who's exploiting the centre of the hockey universe...it's (frank)ing sickening.

Fans have to stop thinking the players care about the team as their #1 priority. It's all about money/term....then when that is is equivalent...yes the city/team matter.
- Symba007

I just find it terribly frustrating that a Toronto kid can see how batpoop crazy the city went for winning the NBA championship, and not be able to put two and two together and realize that if he takes a little less, it could mean a helluva lot more. And I'm not talking about karma or warm fuzzy feelings - I'm talking about cold, hard cash.

Win the Stanley Cup for Toronto, and you will never buy another drink in this town again. You'll be set for life with endorsement deals.

FFS, Wendel Clark is on my TV every night washing tires, or some poop like that.

What's the difference between $9.5 million and $10.5 million? Crosby figured it out - it's better to leave a little money on the table so that you can have a better supporting cast.

I know he looks like a kid, but the guy is an adult now.

He's at the centre of those decisions and can influence them any way he likes.

- Scabeh

This is Marner's first contract where he has any say. Marner has zero experience with negotiating contracts so he has an agent to try to get him his best deal. Agent is compensated based on Marner's deal so he has a vested interest in getting as much as possible. Agent doesn't care about Leafs and their cap. Marner's play last year put him in discussion of Matthews' and Tavares' money even if he doesn't score as many goals and isn't a center.

I expect everyone here would act just like Marner if they were in his position.

Relax, Marner will not sign an offer sheet and will sign a contract that many will deem too much.

Sorry, this is on Marner. The bottom line is, he expects to be treated like an adult and make millions of dollars. It is 100% on him how he allows his father and agent to handle his affairs.

He is the boss; not them.

- Aetherial

Agreed.. It's Marner's decision on when/where he signs..

If he wants to be a Maple Leaf, he would have signed already. Simply end the offer-sheet poop.. Its not like the Leafs are offering $6M per on a long term deal.

Funny, Carolina is reportedly offering 6 million per to Aho yet there's more heat on the Leafs offering 10 to a winger. Dreger whined this morning how bad Marner has it. LOL

The player has the final say on where/when they sign though..
Why not just say "frank you Ferris, I only want to play here"

You are thinking with your fan brain which is exactly the reason he has an agent.

Kypreos reported that, and it's possible that the offer was made months ago (like, december) when they signed Teravainen for $5.4 million per.

Frankly it's absurd to think they would even bother approaching him with that number within the last 3 months.

yes. if he wants a man-sized contract, it's time to step up and be his own man.

and there you have it... this was essentially what Shanahan was trying to say in the summer of 2018 ahead the contract negotiations with the three guys.

John Shannon also reported it yesterday. Not saying it's true, but Leafs would get killed offering that to a young star.

I really wish two things:

1) that someone within MLSE would politely tell trolls like Dreger to simply shut up because they know nothing more than "Joe from the 'bridge"...

2) that Joe from the bridge and Bob from Scarborough and Anil from Brampton wouldn't pay ANY attention to doinks like Dreger.

Simmons,
Berger (before him, years ago)
Damien Cox...

there's a virtually endless list of twats who spew garbage under the guise of being "insiders" or "connected"

they know nothing.

Something coming down between COL and ARIZ. Sounds like Carl Soderberg and Kevin Connauton involved

If you're Mitch Marner, and you grew up a fan of the team and claimed it's a dream come true to play for that team, would you then decide hold the team hostage because you felt slighted by what the previous GM did?

I find it frustrating that it's such a battle (you know - only me. I don't know why the rest of you are so cool with this). We use Kucherov as a comparable, but the truth is that Marner has accomplished more by 21 than Kucherov did. Kucherov's success came more at 23, 24, and 25.

The real comparable is still Patrick Kane. Kane at 19, 20, and 21 had a PS of 7.2, 6.9, and 10.3. Marner at the same ages had a PS of 6.6, 7 and 9.8.

Kane came out of his ELC and signed a deal at 11.08% of the cap (equivalent to 9.03m of an $81.5m cap). It was a 5 year deal, and the 5th year ate up one year of UFA.

If you argue a shifting market, and buy up one more year of UFA, then adjust the deal to 12%, it's still $9.78m - which is a pretty fair cost & term.
