Whatever GM signs him to five years should be fired on the spot.

I think I’d rather have Simmonds at 5 years at $3.25 mil per year than Jack Johnson though

Another excerpt from Marshall...

In an aggregate ranking of major scouting services, Legare comes in at an average of 44 overall. Personally, I had him listed as the 36th best skater in this draft class. For the Penguins to get Legare with the 74th pick is a great value and one that might be worth the spend in draft picks when you consider what makes Legare a top-50 caliber prospect.

I didn't study much I the draft after the 1st round because of the Pens lack of picks, but it's hard to believe this wasn't a trade where they moved up and took the BPA.

Their 5th round pick also had a lot of low 3rd, high 4th grades so was also likely BPA. I wouldn't say that about their 1st, but I think people are reading too much into those picks as a change in philosophy. They did just go out and get a speed guy in their last move.

I know what you're saying, but I just see a bias. You mention the Pens, Lightning, etc. "fast and skilled," but then mention Blues, Bruins, etc. as simply "physical." Really, the Blues, Bruins, and Jets play "physical and skilled" because you can, amazingly, be both physical and skilled.

And yes it's a copycat league, and teams will try to emulate the most recent Cup winners. Really, it comes down to getting everybody to play the same way and having enough skill. St. Louis, Chicago and LA didn't win because they checked people do death, they ultimately won because their style and skill was better than the other team's, just like Pittsburgh and Washington.

So yes, a fast-paced transition game is obviously an asset, but it doesn't mean that you can't play physical hockey and be successful, either.

This is a good post. People are too hung up on speed, IMO. Fast doesn't always mean good.

The Pens have a group of aging core players and no significant speed prospects (or really any significant prospects) ready for roles like they did on the Cup teams. They probably can't out speed everyone again, doesn't mean they can't be good.

Personally, I want guys driving play and I don't care if you do it how Hagelin or Hornqvist did it, both are effective. Pens have added some bigger bodies (Simon, Bjugstad) and some burners (McCann, Kahun), wouldn't say they are exclusively trying to add either.

Pick up Pomminville and Ennis for $1M each.
- Barnaby36

Pens don't really need to add any depth forwards at the moment. A lot of people have ZAR-Blueger-Rust as a 4th line.

Not to grind on this, but he had 15g and 26pts in his first 34 games playing primarily on the bottom 2 lines and 1st PP. I think that's a pretty good start to the season before the 2 concussions....JMO.
- madmike71

With Hornqvist, there are enough thing to worry about that make it probably smart to move on. But there's also a lot that gives me hope for a bounce back in scoring.

And he continued to do well in other areas. Everyone worried about the pp w/out Phil should feel the same about Hornqvist because it was way down again when he was out.

With some talk recently saying that the salary cap is hurting the league, I have a short thought that might help.

Allow 20% of a players contract to not count against the cap if the team drafted that player.

For example, Marner could sign with the leafs for 10mil per year, but only 8mil cap hit. This will allow teams who draft well to not be punished and shorten their window.

They really just need to shorten the RFA period. The league is getting younger and more skilled all the time, eventually there won’t be enough money to go around and things will level off. This would also make it so you’re paying your RFAs for more of their prime years instead of paying top dollar for the end of their prime and then having the contract suck at the end
