Not that it mattes but Carolina wanted him to play there.
Either way, don't equate the trade being "blatant" with cap circumvention. - Slump Buster
Eh, they didn’t really want him to play there though |

They trade him and that team buys him out. That's pretty blatant. - BeadyEyedDouche
They gave up a first round pick. That's insane to unload a contract. |

Stralman signing means Risto is 100% gone.
They aren’t going to pay him 4-5 mil to play 3rd pair, and they didn’t trade for Montour to be a 3rd pair RD.
And Bogo is immovable |

Montour and Risto occupy the same role. I don't see any way around that |

Toronto paid a 1st rounder to do it, Carolina has to deal with the cap charge this season and next. Fair game in my eyes - Pegullaville
Agreed. The leafs paid the PRICE. It's not inconceivable that the Leafs regress this year either. The pick could be better than Leafs fans want to believe |

U don’t see any possible way that they could play Risto with Dahlin and Montour on pair 2 with McCabe???
There is a difference between what YOU would do,
and what the Sabres COULD do

When you think about it they essentially paid a first to keep one of their good players. I'd give up at least a first to lose Okposo as his cap figure would get us a good player. |

Of course they could, and it's possible that Krueger even wants to do that. Maybe Krueger thinks he can make Risto a responsible balanced defenseman.
I personally think Risto is an offensive defenseman who should get more o zone starts to maximize his potential. He's better suited to pair 2. I think he and Montour are very similar in terms of being PP, 2nd pair RHD guys.
Neither one should play with Dahlin IMO, nor should Bogo. And I definitely won't be happy to see Risto go; I've loved watching him play. But montour makes him redundant, and if we can get offensive help in exchange for him, we should |

I’m 50/50 on it
If we trade Risto then it better be for a really good player (even if we have to add)
*no more StL trades please
But if we keep him, then i do wanna see him play with Dahlin. Bc if he can make Bogo look decent,
then maybe playing with Dahlin can help Risto’s consistency
There’s been games where he’s looked really great against top competition (Caps & Tampa specifically come to mind... probably why Tampa is interested in him)
So while Risto might be best used as u say,
I’m still holding out hope that he’s more than that

Idk, I think we should stop trying to make Risto something he isn't. He's an offensive defenseman imo. If the sabres were going to move Montour then I would understand his place here, but that's not going to happen.
Of course if the trade market for Risto is pure poop, then they need to keep him |

The guy has played with pretty mediocre partners his whole career
Who’s his best been? McCabe?
And on a team that’s constantly caved in,
with below average goaltending
Even playing a guy who is good defensively that much will result in bad numbers
I’ve seen him dominate the best competition at times
That’s cause for hope that he can do it more consistently

I don't think we should expect him to be suddenly good defensively. I think we should maximize his offensive instincts. I know he's big and tough, but he's closer to Karlsson than Chara imo. I just don't see that role here with Montour. But maybe Krueger sees it like you do. We shall see |
