Dubas did do the kessel deal - HealthyScratch6
Kessel deal lead to Kapanen + 1st that was traded for Andersen + finishing last and drafting Matthews
The biggest issue with the deal is the 1.2m retained. meh |

I dont feel he will get offer sheeted.
Your best winger, and top 2 player, you dont want to play hardball too much. But you cant give in too much, agreed.
He'll figure it out. - Fakepartofme
Giving Matthews the world (frank)ed the marner negotiations. He gave in on Nylander at the last minute (even though I think 6.9 for Nylander at the time wasn't bad) and then didn't even negotiate Matthews just gave him everything why wouldn't marner hold out. Dubas needed to use the bonus structure the leafs can offer that few other can as piece to lower the AAV but he didn't in the Matthews case. He gave him the term and the AAV and then just added the bonus structure for free. Why wouldn't marner hold out. |

He didn’t cave on Nylander.
Marner isn’t Matthews. If he wants Matthews money and term, he can do so on another team. |

The issue with the kessel deal was the fine print. There was a chance that the leafs wouldn't of gotten a first in that deal based on the conditions. Leafs got lucky and it worked out. Also at the time kapanen was looking like a bust. Their top prospect was spring and leafs settled for kapanen. Worked out in the long run or maybe Dubas is smarter than me but who knows this world is crazy. |

I honestly think the Nylander contract will be a good contract in the long run but he did give in at the last minute which I think set the wrong tone for the negotiations for Matthews and marner. If he let Nylander sit out for a year I think he would of had more leverage in negotiations with the other guys. Marner has an argument to make that he's worth Matthews money so he's gonna make it. They don't have to agree but he did lead the team in scoring two years in a row. |

Agreed. Getting Nylander at a cap hit under $7M, seems more like a win. |

I don't think Matthews or Marner looked at the Nylander deal and thought they'd cash in because of it. There were so many reports of Nylander wanted 8m+, we got him at a cap hit under 7M. Also, Nylander never threatened to leave via an offer sheet. |

Nylander also didn’t whine because he didn’t make the NHL at 18. He also didn’t complain about rookie bonuses. (frank) Marner. |

Maybe. I just think that the agents seen that if we push Dubas he will sign. He's not willing to let a player sit the whole year. Also I think the leafs should of made Nylander pay for sitting out half a year. If you're not playing you're not getting paid. The longer you sit the lower the offer. I get that's it's a tough call but I think it made Dubas look like he was bluffing and not willing to go the whole way. |

But were those reports true?
He threatened to sit out.
We also dont know marner is threatening to leave via offer sheet. Hes simply doing what he is allowed to do. Much like a lot other rfas.
Also, the opening offer from an agent is always really high, much like the opening offer from the team is usually low. |

We don't know, but that was being reported at that time. In Marner's case, if it's not true don't you think he'd come out publicly and say that they are false claims? |

Its still the leafs organization.
He left money on the table once, why should he again?
Leading scoring two years in a row. 90 plus points.
Kills penalties, plays D.
Leafs dont have another player that does that. |

They all should of left a little on the table to win. They're on their first contracts off their entry level. Did they have to... No they can go after as much money as they can get. Do leafs fans have to like that no... We can hate their (frank)ing guts for screwing up the best chance the leafs had to win a cup. |

The leafs screwed up their best chance to win a cup this year.
But ya of course, hate them all you want. Its your right.
I have no interest in using any energy doing that. |
