Dundon will eat the loss. If the Habs upped the offer by another $2 Million then they would have got him. This is a no brainer for the Hurricanes.
I doubt Aho even signs it. Carolina will just offer him the same contract without forcing the issue.

- floater_willy

They said Carolina has 7 days to match which would mean Aho signed it.

? maybe it was a bad choice of words.

aho signed it.

I don't think you can trade for a player that signed an offersheet.
Aho knows his salary and contract now - it's just between Montreal and Carolina where he plays next season.

If Carolina's received the offer sheet, it's already signed by AHO, if they match within a week, they get to pay and keep the player and cannot trade him for a year.

isn't that the point?

teams aren't going to grossly overpay in cap space and picks.

he can sign the leafs offer or hang out with paul & dreger until he does.

- Tumbleweed
It is - I just don't get why. How is Carolina going to accept a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for a top center even if they need to sign him to bonus laden / front loaded contract? They could've signed him to a higher AAV and traded his ass for more.

they really were only offering $6M/year?

but it seems like aho's agent is just using bergervin has his female dog for a week.

probably another reason why gm's don't throw around offer sheets very often.

Aho needs to sign that Canes offer as well (your hypothetic higher offer) before they can actually trade him.
Seems Aho wants to play for Canadiens - better for him to sign an offersheet with them than to sign a contract with Canes he knows guarantees a trade to another team (which he has no idea about that team that could be).
Good for him to sign the offersheet.

If you're going to send an offer sheet... Go big or go home. Bergy sent a diet offer sheet. Or a low calorie offer sheet.

21M the first year. Canes should match from a hockey standpoint but that's alot of money to cough up in that first year.

- Scabeh

Easy decision.

I’d even consider going to CAR as Dubas and saying we are going to sign Mitch to 3 years at 8.5.

Let’s make a deal

Honestly - this was a masterful move by Montreal. Really no downside for them other than the fact that they likely pissed off another team/Gm.

Totally agree and can't believe they were lowballing him like that. What I don't get is why Bergevin opens himself up to the supposed wrath of offer sheeting a player and the possibility of being black balled like Holmgren in Philly (i think that was the one? or was it the Oilers when they got Penner from Burke?)? He might have something up his sleeve here, otherwise I don't see his angle of pissing off the old boys club to simply facilitate Aho into getting a better contract.

I think he signed the offer sheet because Carolina was low balling him and it was his only leverage. Who knows though. If the rumors are true that Carolina was lowballing him at 6 million a year, then obviously he's going to use an offer sheet to squeak out more cash than that.
