Ceci has all the physical tools to be excellent. He also works hard and is a good guy.
But he has zero hockey sense. Be prepared to watch him flounder aimlessly in his own zone trying to figure out who to cover. Be prepared to watch him carry the puck into the offensive zone with speed only to skate it into the corner because he has no clue what to do with it.
Maybe the Leafs can put him in a structure where he succeeds. But I think his lack of hockey IQ will always limit him to being what he is. |

Luchuk is an undrafted UFA. 100% a body for the marlies. Harpur is on a 1-way deal, but likely you waive him and send him down. He’s awful.....he’s big but plays like he’s the size of Ryan Ellis. Almost zero redeeming qualities. - sensarmy_11
So Harper is better than half of our D? |

Ceci we can walk away from if they let him go to arbitration and that's what he's awarded, which is likely, as he's making 4.3M now.
Worst case, this frees up cap space for the next 4 years after.
I like this deal: it's a creative move using our bonus-heavy contracts that equate to a lot less in real dollars; it's one of the only ways we can flex our financial might nowadays. - gravyface
Ottawa gave him a qualifying offer of $4.3 million.
He won't go to arbitration.
Play on Leafs for a year, become UFA, sign a stupid deal next year that his new team will instantly regret. |

You think?
He’d be stupid too, unless Dubas is ponying up $50m for a d with a bad back and doesn’t play well with any sort of pressure. |

So, we had to move 3 contracts, and get some warm bodies.
Out:
3 contracts
1st
Carconne
In:
Ceci (1 year at most)
Harpur, warm body near minimum wage
3rd
I would say Dubas had a HUGE mess to clean up. Giving up the first hurt, but otherwise he did OK.
If they sign Marner for 10.5 and have to pay Ceci 4.3, then they have enough to pay 3 minimum wage guys to round out the lineup.
It isn't ideal, but it could have been worse considering the depth of this mess.
