If Carolina matches 8.5 they would match 9.5 as well. 10+ would have been too much for Aho. Bergervin isn't doing the "let's throw a lot of money at a high end player and worry it about it later" mistake with a lot of core players needing contracts in the next few years. If the habs land Aho it won't be because of the AVV, but rather the way the contract is structured.

Carolina has to pay 22 million within the first 12 months. They brought in 21 million at the gate last year with two rounds of playoffs. This isn't just an inconvenience, it (frank)ing hurts them financially. It's also structured to pay him 10 million in his second year when a lockout is expected. Another kick in the teeth to a financially strapped team, with an owner who is apparently very frugal.

I'm not the biggest Bergevin fan, and Carolina probably will match, but this isn't
as simple as Bergevin being too stupid to offer 9.5.

I think the idea is to force Carolina to the table and work out a trade. They could agree to refuse to match and trade the picks back to the habs for roster players and/or prospects.

Completely different scenario though. He will be stepping into a situation where they are expected to compete for a Stanley Cup. And as of right now, that is a weak looking D core if you have Ceci and Dermott penciled in on the top 4.
