He could go to arbitration though knowing that the Leafs will walk on it, let him become a free agent. He could do better than 1 x 4.3M on the open market.

Maybe, maybe not. He made that last year and the allure of being a UFA is pretty tempting: somebody desperate for a RHD will give him 5M x 3 or at least term.

If he does elect to go to arbitration, Leafs should submit $4.4 million as their offer.

It guarantees award will be higher than qualifying offer, so Leafs get to walk away.
