I wonder if Babs had any input on any of these moves, or were some of these made to possible send a message without having to say anything.

alright so as of right now there's:

11,065,311 in open cap space
5,300,000 in hortons contract to go on LTIR
2,075,000~ or so in contracts that will be in the AHL, maybe and extra 700K too

total of just over 19MM to get Marner, CC, and Kerfoot signed.

Should be golden now.

I don't mind the trade with the Avs at all. My only contentions right now are that the club really is lacking in defence first defensemen. It's a big need that really shouldn't be that hard to address. And the lack of toughness in the forward group as well as we all know what they will face in the playoffs.

The Horton cap space goes over the cap but it goes to Horton. So really it means they can get to 87, but in on ice players it's still 81.5. Do they still have that much at that point?

Already enough guys that can't play D on this team.

Phaneuf never was good and will continue being not good.

- JohnFergusonJr

There is a legitimately good reason to sign Phaneuf.

I don't know if he's worse than Ceci or not. Putting them together would help solve that conundrum.

I think I've seen both you and JFJ (and certainly a few others) say that we'll miss Kadri's grit. I don't buy that he's gritty. I don't know what you call that . . . but it never seemed gritty to me. I found he would certainly take cheap shots. He would also fall when he came within 3 feet of another player. I used to think he was trying to draw penalties, and then I began to wonder if he could actually skate!

When Kadri was on, he would throw some hits, and could toe drag nicely, and make good passes. There are things he did that were great, but after his demotion to the 3rd line, I don't know if we'll really miss him that much. I think much of our love of him comes from the fact that he was pretty good at a time when our entire team wasn't.

Kadri was one of the toughest players they had. You saying he wasn't all that gritty says more about the team than him though.

He could score, he could take draws, he played with fire and his contract was great.

No, he wasn't Clark but he was what the Leafs were already in short supply of and now they're even shorter.

And honestly, who cares if they're not under contract? Give us some flexibility and time to decide on the right players to lock up long-term.

Maybe Muzzin regresses heavily, maybe Barrie gets banged up and never bounces back... I'd rather we had some flexibility down the road than handling out contracts for the sake of it.

- gravyface

Sure I agree with that. Maybe Barrie wants to stay and asks for a reasonable contract.

Kadri wwasn't all that tough, but the Leafs haven't been a tough team with him, so him leaving doesn't make them tougher. I like Barrie. I like that he's a Gardiner with a little gumption from the right side. But ultimately they do need some grit out of their forwards and a solid stay at home defensemen. That last one has been a need for years.

kadri is solid but he's a bit of a wasted asset as the 3C. Good trade!

Better to have the grit, the great contract and depth up the middle (especially with two straight years where Matthews missed 20ish games) than a 1 year rent-a-RHD.

His contract was great for a #2C. His contract was good for a #3C.

He was medicore on draws, but I'll concede that he could take them!

He could score. Obviously the loss in ice time, and reduced role changed his game, but he was a good player, there's no doubt.

I don't think he was gritty at all - in terms of how I view grit. If he is your grit, then you don't need him, because Kadri isn't what grit should look like. His acts, in my opinion, were frequently more cowardly than brave or tough. That's not gritty. That's dangerous.

I agree that some sandpaper - something to make it unpleasant to play the Leafs would be useful. I don't know where the grit comes from - but I don't think Kadri should have ever have been the guy to bring that grit.
