The team isnt even on the ice yet and people know exactly how it will all play out. Why play any games? Just jump to the next off season on August 1st.
- Aaron_85

Cool, can we?
Did they make it past the 1st round?

You cant have a 6.9m 3rd line center. Plus nylander needs to play with better players to help him get to 60pts. Hes soft, not the type of 3rd line center we need.
Keep willie on the wing, put kerfoot at center.

keep willi with another team 🤦‍♂️

Once the season starts and the Leafs are under the cap it doesn't matter what the players earn anymore. You put them where they give the Leafs the biggest chance at success.

I know you've all been waiting for my opinion on the trade (let me have this one Bixll), so here it is:

I like this trade for the Leafs.

In Barrie, they get a good offensive defenseman that can easily replace Gardiner. Yes he's signed only for a year but depending on the results, that could not matter. And the Leafs could always resign him if needed.

Losing Kadri hurts, he's an effective player (I personally hate him) and gave you guys alot of depth at centre. At the same time, his repeated idiotic actions ended up hurting the team way more and he will not be missed in the playoffs (can anyone do worse than not playing?).

Kerfoot being included in the trade is crazy. He's a good young player that could easily have a career year playing with some talented players next year.

On the Avs side, they lose Barrie but he'll be replaced by Makar and they really needed that 2nd line centre. Kadri will look good over there but don't look back fellas.

Overall a solid trade by Dubas.

Cheers! Aho!

Aho matey!

Carolina better match.
And thanks to bergy, marners price just dropped a bit.

Missed the playoffs. Canes picking 11th. Barrie and Muzzin walked. Dermott signed an offer sheet.

No it matters.
Willie hasnt been able to carry a line yet. Keep him with matthews. Plus our 3rd line center needs to have grit and a bit of fight. Willie isnt that.
If he has to fill in for injury short term, ok. But not permanently
Imo

Aho only signed because of Carolina not giving him the right offer.
If anything, Leafs should have put in an offersheet for Aho if that was the offer he was going to sign for..
(assuming that this whole 'pick your picks out of next 5 years' was possible )

I expect them to match, even if there's always that small chance the Habs strategy of front loading that contract works...

I can't say how it'll impact other RFAs.... it could drop their value a little but Aho's contract sends him right to being a UFA too. It's not ideal. Hence why Carolina didn't offer him something similar in the first place.

Oh and that whole "21M in the first year" thing.

Interesting move by Bergevin. Even if Carolina matches, by signing the OS, he will eventually be traded. Doubt Carolina will accept 1st, 2nd and 3rd as compensation. I would think if it would be a trade it might be Kotkeniemi plus a 1st at the very least.

Not permanently, but if it's between Spezza, Kerfoot, Nylander, and Shore (who didn't play in the NHL last year), Nylander might still be the best option, even if it isn't ideal long term. And Babcock certainly doesn't build his lines around salary, that's for sure.

GMs for the most part have been sensible this july 1. A few deals that could turn out horrible are Stralman (but still only 3 years), maybe Varlamov.

I hope the Habs get Aho - would be great to have a proper Habs-Leafs rivalry.
And I don't like the Carolina Hurricanes - as boring as a team you can imagine.

I don't think a trade will happen if they match.

KK is not going anywhere.

For what it's worth, even if it fails, I do appreciate the balls of Bergevin of doing it.

And there are others RFA's if needed. OFFER SHEET THEM ALL BERGY!

Well calculated offer sheet for sure. Both teams will be competing for a wild card spot IMO and from the Habs perspective why not (frank) the team you are competing with if you can.

And the compensation would "only" be a first a 2nd and a third.

It's a "can't lose" scenario for the Habs imo.

Unlike other fans, I can live with the idea of keeping the cap space and taking advantage of a team in trouble down the line.
