Looking at most of the FA's left is a whose who of mid-2000's stars. Wonder what happens. Marleau, Jumbo, Vanek, Phaneuf, Pominville, Brassard, Williams and Ward. - AdamFrench
Probably the only player I would take from that list.
Maybe jumbo but I don’t see him leaving sj. |

Not a chance of this IMO. GM's are worried about their jobs over the much shorter term. In this case Bergevin probably doesn't have a job if the Habs miss the playoffs this year. - winsix
This is true.
Despite him doing a pretty good job in the last 18 months imo. |

I don't think it was that bad of an offersheet.
21million in signing bonuses in 1st 12 months of that contract with Canes being a financially challenged team, I could see it being worth the risk.
People speak about 21million as if it were 21 bucks. - MaximusAurelius
The owner just said it was incredibly easy to match it because he's retard rich. |

He sold 90% of his auto loan company in 2006, started a new investment company and built himself an office tower in Dallas to house it. Invested in TopGolf in 2011, bought a golf course, a health insurance company....
and then he got a $713 million cash pay out for the last 10% of his company in 2017.
Honestly I don't know that anyone actually knows how much money he really has aside from himself. |

I thought they were from what I understood after reading a brief article. I'm not CBA expert though, so I could very well be wrong. I'll try and look back and see what the deal was. I'd imagine they are exempt if they are causing issues though. The article was about how bonuses are messing with escrow, so maybe I assumed that, but idk how else they would screw with them...you know what I mean? - RickJames77
I do. I just skimmed some stuff on it. I sort of understand where the problem would be. The bonuses are still subject to the escrow payments, but the escrow is revisited quarterly and adjusted as the needs and revenue expectations shift.
So if the projection is lower in July than it would be as the year progresses, the percentage paid into escrow is lessened. I still have more to understand here (do I really want to?) though, because the July 1 payments would typically follow the application of the escalator which would artificially increase the revenue expectation & cap ceiling. That should see a lessened percentage as the year goes on as you try to normalize . . . you know. I'm a different sort of nerd than a money nerd. |

new CBA negotiations will be nice.
Montreal, NYR, Toronto and a few other teams keep on giving money to teams like Carolina, and then the GM being cocky.
He'll be out in 3 years. |

Not sure if you recall Burke challenging Lowe to a fistfight when Penner signed an offersheet. I'm not so sure Waddell would do too well.
