It's almost as if graphs and numbers could be interpreted to validate any point of view if you take the right ones!

My coworker was all jazzed up this morning thinking the Habs were landing Aho. Now it looks like someone pissed in his cheerios.

I am pleased. I also pissed in his cheerios.

Or if your big into kidding yourself. Barrie is so amazing and a legit top pairing defensemen he was traded for a second line centre and the Avs had to eat half his salary.

I mean that's normal right. Guys trade top paring d men and eat half their salaries for 2nd line centres all he time.

- aminnes

There are too many people like you on here.

Forget the fact Kadri has 3 years left on his deal. Why? Because it helps your point.

You aren't worth arguing with so I am going to choose to just ignore you here.

He's not a championship level top pairing defensemen. Where are getting this? And yes, we all wanted a defensemen, what was unnecessary was bringing in another offensemen. Have too many of those already.

I like the trade in principle. I just don't like it if this is it, because if it is, the Leafs actually found a way to be even worse in their own next season.

I'm sure most of the players on Ottawa last season had great metrics and stats, after all they were one of the best teams in history weren't they?
- winsix

The problem with Ceci is that his metrics are uniformly bad in the seasons when Ottawa was playing well.

Time will tell. There are scouts and advisors and so on who see more than we do. But his metrics are his portrait of Dorian Gray.

For what it's worth, I think Barrie is a nice addition to the Leafs.

But if anything, he's a very comparable player to Jake Gardiner... I like Barrie better but I feel like it's mostly because I see less of him and the defensive mistakes he might do.

I’m really enjoying watching all the anti-Toronto fans with their little hate boners say how screwed the team is and “no way they can pay Marner” when Dubas has found a way to clear a couple bad contracts, trim some fat, now have about $17-19m to sign Marner, Ceci & Kerfoot and bring in a top pairing D to address that need from a position of strength.

It must be hard watching this as a Leafs hater.

- As_I_See_It

the $17 - 19 include the $5M Horton LITR correct?

should be able to fit Marner, Ceci(4.1 I believe) and Kerfoot(bridge) in that... and there's sufficient competition amongst all the guys including the 2 Russian guys just brought in and all the 700K guys that one or two of them turn out.

doesn't leave much room for adding anything of significance to the defense core...

if they need to.

The Leafs are all about getting the puck up to their forwards.

Barrie is going to flourish with the Leafs if he stays healthy.

Rielly-Barrie on the ice with JT and Marner is going to be special.

In principle, deal had to be made, and I don't mind it. But if they don't do more to bring in more defensive help it will have been pointless.

Kerfoot was a good pickup as well.

even he still sucks, we will be in a better position.

ceci is most likely 3rd pairing once dermott is healthy. let him suck on the 3rd pair for 12 minutes a night.

let him walk next year. clearing $4.5M will be handy when it comes to barrie/muzzin extensions.

Z's $4.5M off the books could look even better next year, depending what comes out of the new cba/lockout.

Read the thread. I was responding to someone who thought they had cap space to sign another guy, which they don't.

They can play out the season and see what shapes out. In February they re-assess and look to add a veteran D if they need it. Muzzin, Rielly and Barrie all are proven top-4 guys so maybe one more is needed. Maybe Dermott takes that next step or Ceci finds some kind of enlightenment (doubtful) but the D is better off then it was in October of last year.

Don't get me wrong on this - the trade is wonderful because we have 1 year of suck vs. 5 years of suck. That $4.5m should absolutely go towards keeping one or both of Muzzin & Barrie if possible (and if they are good in this market).

I am sort of amused because I didn't know much about him (I'd heard people complain, obviously), and then started looking at different metrics. And they were bad. So I looked at others, thinking, 'there's gotta be SOMETHING good here', and just not finding it!

Sort of like how if you go see a movie and everyone tells you it sucks, you won't think it's as bad . . .

Hopefully (if he’s playing well ) we can resign Barrie in the new year and not have to wait until July 1. It will be a little bit of a let down if he leaves after this season.

Last 3 years are negative on the analytics side, but hopefully playing with Muzzin that will straighten him out.

so... serious questions....
1) which teams are going to be ones with GMs on the hot seat going into the season - aside from Kekäläinen?
2) which team(s) will have the greatest need for scoring?

I'm trying to come up with the most logical locations to which to trade Nylander ... assuming he's lighting it up in the first 1/4 of the season?
