Some commentators on 590 say Leafs are now one of the favourites to win the president ‘s trophy. But by the same token, the Leafs lost something without Kadri so the gangs are not sure about SC.

As I said - and it's nice to see a brain rather than name calling - the trade in principle is good. However if they don;'t get more defensive type help what was the point. It becomes lateral at that point.

The leafs don't want to be in their own end, it's simple. Get guys that can move the puck up to the skilled forwards.

Having a homer dman isn't good. It means he spends his time in his own zone. Don't want that.

Sign mcquaid who was healthy scratched in clb to chop the puck to smithereens. Put Matthews on the ice with him and it's a wasted shift stuck in the leafs zone chasing the puck around.

so... serious questions....
1) which teams are going to be ones with GMs on the hot seat going into the season - aside from Kekäläinen?
2) which team(s) will have the greatest need for scoring?

I'm trying to come up with the most logical locations to which to trade Nylander ... assuming he's lighting it up in the first 1/4 of the season?

This is what Harley Hotchkiss said to Bruce Dowbiggin in an interview in 2005:

"Quite frankly, he saved our franchise and likely Edmonton and Ottawa with (his support of) the Canadian currency assistance program. . . . That act alone is often overlooked, but it saved our franchise. . . . He saved other franchises with his own high energy and determination and grasp of what needs to be done."

Bettman established a revenue-sharing model for the Canadian franchises when the dollar was so low - US franchises subsidized the Canadian ones.

It's something that nobody wants to remember or talk about.

Between the two of them, Barrie is a much more effective transition player and brings even more offensive prowess than Gardiner. But for those fans who grew frustrated with Gardiner’s decision making in the defensive zone and risky play with the puck, buckle in because Barrie is about to take you on a wild ride. Gardiner’s defensive impact has been much stronger than Barrie’s over the past few seasons, and in fact Barrie’s defensive impact is around the 44th percentile in the NHL, while Gardiner’s is 56th, so that part is a downgrade.

Whenever fans knock Betteman I often tell them about that. He did save Canadian franchises. Granted, if he did not it would have been a disaster as a majority of their revenues are coming from only 7 Canadian teams. So he made $ by spending it. BUt he couldn't know future numbers at that time.

Has it occurred to you that both Barrie and Ceci are playing on a better team and could be slid down the depth chart into situations that are better suited to them?

Probably not.

"Way better" may be a bit of an exaggeration.

But I think what people are conveniently forgetting is that both Gardiner and Dermott were far from 100% in the playoffs.

We don't have to be "way better" next year. Just a little better, and "way healthier."

Absolutely not.

Plus minus is a garbage stat.
