I said this a few time during the frankly franking waste of a time GM search, but it is looking more and more like the Seattle Starbuckcino's is whom Im gonna cheer for next season. There is no way they can be out on everything. And the prices of trades, as well as signings makes them look even worse. Maybe no one was interested, but seriously, I feel like they swung a no hitter. Yeah they signed some guys. More or less just more filler no killer. |

Oh good news tho....no more Kadri for Nurse chatter |

I would have rather moved Johnson than Barrie and given Barrie his deserved raise.
Johnson just came off a shoulder surgery at the age of 30. He is a great defender, no doubt, but if there was any time that they should have tried to trade him, it was now while they can. I can't see that contract doing them any good down the road (considering Johnson's injury history and age) compared to paying Barrie 8m and trading away Johnson. - EdmHockeyMan
But moving Johnson leaves Barrie as your hard matchups guy and- no disrespect to Barrie- that's not his game. He's at his best getting the lion's share of offensive responsibilities. With Makar, Girard and perhaps Byram in the lineup, I don't think it's wise to have all the offensive opportunities being fed to a guy making 8mil. If that guy making 8mil sees his offensive opportunities drop away, his play and value is going to suffer. |

The sad thing is, regardless of how the seasons go... I will probally still be back cheering for the franking oilers. Just like the rest of you. |

I was thinking Benning and a pick. They got way more than that for him. |

After he puts up a bajillion points this year in Toronto he might be worth more than 8 mill. |

I take part of the year off every year. Pretty much from January until June. |

Yeah it really helps with Oilers burnout.
I take part of that time off hockey in general pretty much, get back into it when things get interesting around the TDL and playoffs but by then the Oil are usually irrelevant so I'm just following passively.
This is why I am not that good of a candidate for the fantasy hockey pool thing. |

I should just watch the Condors this year....I’m pretty damn sure they will be good this year again and they were a fun group to watch |

I see your point, however, I think Barrie's defensive game is underrated. He doesn't go to the body, nor play a gritty style. What he does so well and has continually improved on is his decision making. He makes smart plays and knows when to jump on the rush or stay back. He plays a modern game of hockey where the defender plays the most crucial role of transitioning the play.
If that isn't enough, I actually counter your claim that Barrie is getting the lion's share of the offensive opportunities. This season, Johnson actually had 7 more neutral zone starts per 60 than Barrie, but only 4 fewer starts offensively per 60. However, Barrie only had 3 fewer starts defensively per game. Overall though, Johnson got more offensive zone starts than defensive zone starts (individually). Nonetheless, Barrie's possession metrics were far better than Johnson's in every metric. Every, single, metric. I can get nitty gritty here, but go look at the naturalstatrick data if you want to dig into it yourself.
If I were Sakic, I would have dealt Johnson and signed Barrie to 8m per year without a doubt in my mind. |
