Pretty sure that OS was purely based on the belief that they could poach an elite RFA from a cheap owner @ a bargain of a cap hit (and only lose a 1st, 2nd & 3rd). Highly doubt heā€™ll be sending out any others if that was the case.

Point is worth a 1st/2nd/3rd & maybe 2-1sts. TBL are in a pickle.

Connor is who could be next though.

I remember being unhappy when he was let go. I think Linden let him go.

He was against the Gudbranson trade, told them they were stupid to make that deal and was then fired for ā€œnot being on the same pageā€

Aho is maybe a bargain.
He can be a UFA sooner than the Canes had offered.
Upfront bonuses is better than waiting for inflation to eat it up. Canes lose in that regard.

Carolina will wait the allowed 7 days to match, which means Montreal canā€™t OS anyone else until that time because their draft picks are on hold. I applaud Waddell for sticking it to them

I wonder how come we havenā€™t taken a run at Ferkland yet?

Heā€™ll yeah both are solid plays by both teams. I bet Carolina offer more and restructure the offer tendered as well.

ā€œThe Montreal Canadiens shocked the hockey world on Monday when they signed Carolina Hurricanes restricted free-agent forward Sebastian Aho to a five-year, $42.27-million offer sheet. It was the first time since 2013 that an offer sheet had been signed.

For Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon, who said Tuesday his club will match the offer sheet, it was apparently more of a nuisance than an actual obstacle.

"Everyone's trying to make their team better," Dundon told ESPN's Greg Wyshynski. "We've looked at all the ways to (do that), never came to the conclusion that the offer sheet was the best way. Your probability of succeeding is almost zero. It was proven that it was a waste of time."

Only one offer sheet - Dustin Penner in 2007 - hasn't been matched since 1997.

The $8.454-million cap hit on Aho's offer sheet was much lower than many expected for a player of his caliber. However, Montreal front-loaded the deal with $21.87 million to be paid out in bonuses over the first 12 months.

"This sounds terrible but writing that check is no big deal," Dundon said, according to The Athletic's Sara Civian. "The fact that you're (Canadian media) asking me if $20 million is a lot might be how we got in this situation."

Dundon became the majority owner of the Hurricanes on Jan. 11, 2018. Forbes estimated his net worth to be $1.1 billion in 2015.

Aho's agent, Gerry Johannson, added some drama to the situation by telling reporters that his client "100 percent" wants to play in Montreal.

"I couldn't care less about Sebastian's agent," Dundon told Civian. "It doesn't matter at all.

"There's no scenario where Sebastian Aho doesn't want to be on the Hurricanes. If he said that it would be different but he didn't. The fact that an agent said it means that there's no credibility to it, number one."ā€

I love that Canadian media is asking a billionaire if he can afford to pay the bonus money

Iā€™d be a good GM, because I tell people what I really think instead of what is polite. On second thought, maybe I wouldnā€™t...

Aah they matched already šŸ˜‚

Besides agents would advise players to wait if smart. No rush knowing MB has just given them more leverage.

I think the owner is going to teach Aho a lesson and make him stay in a state where it is sunny all year , with beaches that are filled with bikinis and a place where it is legal to marry your sibling.

Waddel & his stupid offer forced the OS to happen. Now Aho got what he wanted & a UFA sooner to hit another homerun.

No, they said they would match, but they have until next Monday to do so. All the while, Montreal canā€™t OS another player because the compensation picks are locked in until Carolina either does or doesnā€™t match.

Itā€™s amazing. I was assured (as were the rest of you) that a player would never bet on themself to sign a shorter deal for a bigger payday later...

Moot

I donā€™t see RFAā€™s rushing to sign knowing they have more leverage now that MB made his play. It could be pre-emptive & not over with let alone other teams lurking.

What is waiting 1 week when no hockey til October.

If there is a trade available but you canā€™t make the deal because it involves a draft pick, and another team makes the deal while youā€™re waiting. Another RFA who might sign an OS, but in the week you are waiting they come to an agreement with their team.
