Waddell is apparently pretty annoyed the deal only buys one year of Aho’s free agent years. He’ll be a UFA very young.

If there is a trade available but you can’t make the deal because it involves a draft pick, and another team makes the deal while you’re waiting. Another RFA who might sign an OS, but in the week you are waiting they come to an agreement with their team.
- 1970vintage

Then MB has effectively helped an RFA get a teams best offer. There is no deadline for MB nor rush if he has another OS up his sleeve. I don’t believe he has only contacted AHO’s agent.

Well he started the ball rolling & should’ve not been so stupid & used foresight. It was he who rolled the dice...

Waddel has to be the dumbest GM if he thought he had leverage to get an elite 1C to take a 8/6m offer. Besides he has done nothing as a GM in previous jobs & he inherited what he has & already couldn’t sign Skinner. He is not the 1st GM who has ridden in on someone else's groundwork & set the foundation he so luckily inherited.

Hopefully our next GM does well with the prospects Benning picked up from his failed seasons

I think he could have gotten 8 x $9 or so from a Carolina. He's banking that with a rising cap, and his good play he can get a 7 or 8 year deal in the $teens when he is 27 or whatever his age at the expiry of this deal.

Canucks gave 29 year old Mayers 5 years, 27 year old Aho should be able to ge5 7 years as an UFA.

Mooches are easy to find lol
Bowman rode in on Tallons work
Waddel on Francis
JR ditto

Very few if any GM builds a winner & gets the cup not named Armstrong or Lombardi.

No GM in the draft era has a team unto himself, successful or otherwise, they all inherit pieces from previous regimes.

With the exception of holland who was in Detroit for 22 years and capturing 3 cups. The many reinventions of that team would be on him

No, he too inherited a team that won a cup in his first year as a GM (1998). They’d won the previous year in 1997.

I wasn't aware it was in his 1st year but regardless, he reinvented the team a few times over in his 22 years.

On July 18, 1997, he was promoted to general manager, executive vice president and alternate governor of the Detroit Red Wings. The 2012–13 season was his 16th as general manager and his 30th year overall with the Red Wings organization. He has won the Stanley Cup four times with Detroit: the first in 1997 as assistant general manager and goaltending coach, and the latter three as general manager in 1998, 2002 and 2008.[3][4]

We were both wrong lol

Yes, but the point was that he inherited players like every other GM, the 98 and 2002 teams for sure, the exception would be 2008, I guess, he’d been on the job ten years at that point.

Pieces? Superstars are pieces now lol
Tallon inherited one of the saddest teams ever. Architects who were sent packing left pieces & that’s the end of it ok 👍

Poile is damn good at drafting.

No I wasn’t wrong, he won in 1998 in his first year as GM (97/98 season), then again in 2002 with a group that still included Yzerman, Federov, Lidstrom, etc. all guys he inherited as GM.

David Poile has never won a damn thing as a GM. Well I guess he won the western conference lol.

Tallon did a great job with the scouting staff in Chicago, but, he too inherited Duncan Keith.

Cups aside the Preds were never horrible since inception. Only VGK can claim that & they had e-draft advantages.

Wow Keith put the Hawks over the top 😂

I think the owner is going to teach Aho a lesson and make him stay in a state where it is sunny all year , with beaches that are filled with bikinis and a place where it is legal to marry your sibling.

Some more than others. Bowman had everything needed. Hossa was an essential add but he still had more than any gm can ask for to work with
