looking at numbers, this is good for both teams.
Leafs can afford Barrie's salary next year if they really want to (Ceci's 4.3 mil will not be around)
They can also trade others to clear room, so money is no issue.
Kadri will be great on the Avs and will easily get more than 60 points. Last season he had dead weight on his wings and had very limited play time due to Matthews and Tavares.
The true worth of it all, is he has a 4.5 mil contract for a few more years instead of making somewhere around 7 mil.
The rest of the deal is just a balancing act, Kerfoot and pick plus some retained salary (1.3 mil for just this year, isn't much for Colorado). Rosen is a 7D plug that might surprise and climb the ranks into a permanent bottom pairing role, but its a dice roll.
Both teams improved.

It is not just that they are soft. These are guys (Tavares, Matthews and Spezza) that have never won at any level. Winners win. Always be cautious about players who put up great personal numbers but their teams fail to win. Tavares and Spezza were great juniors but their teams never succeeded. Winning is an element of character. Winners lift their team mates on their shoulders and carry them to victory. These guys do not know how to win. - spatso

Really. When the Leafs signed Tavares I said they would regress on the ice and not have as good a season as the previous year. I was correct.
I said the Tavares signing would put the Leafs in CAP hell this summer. I was correct.
This year, I am saying that Leaf fans will come to regret trading Kadri. Leafs will continue to slide from their high of two years ago. - spatso
The Leafs having a worse year than the on before had nothing to do with Tavares considering they basically had the same team, so while you're right in terms of the results, your reason why doesn't make sense. You're "right" by default.
In terms of being in "cap hell", again that's up for interpretation. Once they sign Marner they've kept all of their key pieces going forward. The cap exists, there's no way around it, it's up to the teams to move salaries around and if a team has a lot of good players, at some point teams have to make deals they don't want to. If the Leafs are in cap hell then so were the Sens when they couldn't afford to keep Stone and Karlsson, the Sens cap was just internal.
I'll give you the Marleau deal, but that's hardly "hell" they lost a 1st, which hurts but it doesn't affect the team very much going forward. In fact it allowed them to sign two key young players so it can be seen as a good move.
In regards to the Kadri deal, it also hurts but at the same time it addresses anobvious need. Who knows how it will work out but it's a deal that had to be done and had nothing to with the the cap. Kadri will be missed but Dubas was smart to move salary into a position of need. |

C'mon man you know you don't need to ask that.
I'm sad to see Naz go. I've been a fan since his Knights days. That being said it was time, two suspensions in two consecutive playoff years is enough. He also deserves better than to plat 3c.
Seems like a decent return, hopefully Barrie can be signed long term.
Love the same (frank)tards on here bashing Kadri when he was suspended all of a sudden talking him up. Typical haterade. |

I like the trade for the Leafs, but it isn't horrible for the avs by any means. Tough to find a guy that can be a 2C with some grit and can score, and is locked up for 3 more years at 4.5.
Barrie is a FA next year, Sakic did all right with this. |

Aves got penetrated hard on this one. BAD. They are eating 50% of Barrie's salary? AND the Leafs get Kerfoot. |

Yeah but Barrie's deal expires next year while Avs get Kadri on a good contract with term left.
Rosen is a bit of a wildcard in this, I thought he would be in our opening night lineup. He may turn out decent - I'm worried he'll become another Anton Stralman.
I think this is a decent trade for both teams. |

I remember making a trade in my roto baseball pool that was completely insane in my advantage. The guy told me that he was drunk off his ass when he read my proposal and hit the "accept". Next morning reality set in and couldn't believe he made the trade...
I think Sakic might wake up tomorrow and think "what the (frank) did I just do?!"

No matter how one may try to spin it..Leafs not only got the best player in the deal, they also got another solid piece and half of the best players salary retained.
Leafs will have no problem retaining Barrie after next year IMO. |

Seriously, Kadri sealed his fate with that last suspension. Two years running, same damn penalty and same damn suspension. Yeah he plays with heart, but his team went to the seventh game twice, maybe if he were smart enough, or had the maturity and restraint, not to draw a suspension, the Leafs might have advanced. So let the Avs have him, and let the Leafs deal with the cap hits later. PS, Babs brought out the best in Kadri, lets see how he does elsewhere. In the meantime, we have improved where we were lacking, D was killing us. Gardiner's decisions on ice were questionable at best. But now our D has Rielly, Muzzin, Ceci, Barrie plus whats in development. Think we have improved our D, and Dubas has passed the test. |

I don't think retaining salary was big deal for Colorado. They have a ton of cap room. Joe Sakic has shown to be pretty solid GM... I like the deal for both sides. I like it even more if Kerfoot can notch 20 goals, and Barrie resigns... |

Hmm. Hardly see how this is a bad deal for Colorado.
Barrie is a good defenseman but not a 1. Kadri is a legit number two centre. All things being equal I'll take Barrie. Thing is all things are not equal. Kadri has one of the best contracts in the whole league. Barrie is a one year rental who figures to make 7 mill a year or more.
The leafs did well in that the two big defensemen out there for trade are probably Barrie and Risto, and I'd much rather have Barrie for a cup run next year than Risto.
Colorado did well in that the got a great contract and a great player long term.
Seems like an ok trade. |

Kadris skills got lost in the lineup. He regressed last year playing on the 3rd line with worse linemates, glad he's on a team where he can play big minutes and be a bigger part of the lineup. Barrie and Kerfoot are an excellent return - mgriffen
wait until you see barrie play and realize he's yet another offensive player/defenseman the leafs don't need. gardiner 2.0 |

Spatso, you know what really helps a team win in the playoffs? Actually playing games. I know Kadri's heart was an absolute weapon from the press box, but unfortunately it wasn't as useful as it could have been if he were dressed.
I've been a Kadri fan since his days in the OHL. I'm sad to see him go. That being said he's proven he can't be trusted to not make stupid decisions in the heat of the moment. |

I like this trade for the Avs. Barrie is a great offensive player but will make you curse him at times with his defensive play and untimely turnovers. His offensive numbers make him look like a steal for the Leafs, but watching him night in and night out his mistakes offset at least some of his scoring. He will be looking for a huge raise next year after this contract is up and is most likely a 1 year rental player. Retaining 50% of Barrie's salary is not a big deal for the Avs because of lots of cap room, and if it helps them get the 2C they were after than so be it.
Kerfoot is a talented player but he is soft. He doesn't like to go to the difficult areas of the ice and most often looks to go wide rather than take it to the net. He will too often pass instead of shoot even when he is in a great scoring area of the ice. I don't see much upside from where he is already at.
I'm not a big fan of Kadri, but, he is the more talented and complete player of the three. He was demoted to the 3rd line in Toronto because of Mathews and Tavares and will produce better results in a top 6 role with the Avs. He brings a lot more grit than most anyone on the Avs roster and will be a welcome addition with his "in your face" style of play.
I like what Sakic did here. A real hockey trade. Both teams accomplished what they were after and improved their teams. |

Barrie totally helps the leafs for one year on at a great price, he will demand huge money in a year. Kadri is under a contract for three more years on a great deal.
I like this more for Colorado - Ross77
