From what I understand, there is nothing in the CBA that would prevent Carolina from negotiating with Montreal on a separate deal not involving Aho, though. So, in theory, Carolina could call up Montreal and say, "If you agree to give us [insert package from MTL] for [insert package from CAR], we will not match the offer sheet."

I've seen some people say Carolina could trade the compensation picks it gets from Montreal back to Montreal for something else, but I have no idea if that's accurate. It seems like an obvious way to circumvent the offer sheet system, so I would think the CBA would address it somehow--like the no trade for one year rule.

No it wasn't, it was actually genious. They front-loaded the absolute hell out of it, basically paying him over 20 million his first two seasons in signing bonuses.
