I wouldn't say we need Gardiner as much as we don't need Scandella.
- TheSabresTaco

Also that it's speculated that Buffalo is in on him still.

Rumor is 7 years at $6.8M.

I don't think Botts makes that deal.

Dahlin - Bogo (succeeded as a pair)

Gardiner - Ristolainen (Risto can let Gardiner carry the puck)

Pilut/McCabe - Miller (Pair of great puck movers)

Casey Nelson

Allows you to trade Scandella and McCabe.

- TheSabresTaco

This isn't your father's NHL. Guys that can skate and drive play are what matters.

I don't know if Gardiner is worth it but it would give us more trade pieces to buy a couple of top 6 players. I'd take him over Tyler Myers any day of the week.

Sabres have 10 dmen currently.

Bogo
Scandella
Risto
Dahlin
McCabe
Pilut
Miller
Hunwick
Montour
Nelson

Add Gardiner and that is 11.

3 would need to go.
Scandella
Risto

And who else.

Why do we need Gardiner ????
- SABRES 89

Because he's free. If we sign him we can use Risto as a trade chip, or McCabe I suppose. I'd rather have Gardiner than either tbh.

Seems a bit high and is longer term than I'd like, but if you can pay him 1.4M more than Risto, trade Risto straight up for a 2C, I think you have to consider it at least.

Risto WILL be traded when GARDINER is Signed by a team.

Then the dominos begin to fall.......

out of the available stop gaps, are any worth exploring for 1-2 years?

Brassard
Lehtera
Johansson
Spooner
Dano (more of a winger)

- thatsapickle

Nope, not imo
The only one who is a maybe would be Johansson
But he’s been more of a winger & will probably get overpaid for a long term
If it’s 5mil for 2yrs then fine
But anything longer or higher, then pass

A d corps with all puck movers and no defensemen is either going to get Botterill fired or get him a medal

Gardiner is definitely a Botterill player. I'd really like him to sit right behind Dahlin in the lineup.

I also demand the 'who goes' speculation that would occur immediately after the signing.

- TheSabresTaco

But if Gardiner gets near 7mil...
Why do we have to give Dahlin on his next deal
And do we not want any defensemen that actually play defense?

Also,
Spending that 7mil on Gardiner prevents us from spending that $$$ up front

IMO if Gardiner was getting 7 years 7 mill it was two days ago. Most of the GM's did good and refused to go crazy, I bet we are looking at 5 years 33 million.

Dzingel is still out there because no one wants to give him 6 either.

Interesting article on the Atheltic today about bad July 1st signings. Both Drury and Briere made the list. For as much lamenting as we all do about losing them we never look at the other side: these guys were never as good later on. Sure, Briere had 3 good years but he was bought out not long after that. Drury was already on the decline. I am not saying that we were better off.... but it isn't like we lost these guys in their prime.
- Slump Buster

Briere was bought out of the final two years of his 8 yr deal.

I doubt they sign him but if they did they would deal Risto's 5.5 or so contract and maybe McCabe's soon to be 2.5ish next deal that would give them a +1 mil gain. Math is a good thing to know.

I was trying to find the article, but Briere told WGR after his arbitration in 2006 hearing that "4 years 4.5 million per year was never offered" or something like that. Supposedly that pissed Quinn and Golisano off.

Offer sheet 2007 for Vanek was 2007

2008 #1 Eberle
2009 #1 Paajarvi
2010 #1 Taylor Hall
2011 #1 RNH

Id say it would have been worth it

- lulags

Problem is Edmonton isn’t as bad as they were with those teams.

Right, but he had hit a wall 2 years before that. Either way... they knew that he wouldn't be good those years when they signed him.
