Seriously, what free agents really wanted to join the buffalo Sabres?

Is that jbotts fault that we are the armpit of the east?
Hes only been here for 2 years.

I'll remind you everytime he makes a significant roster move to improve the sabres.

The last 2 years got us dahlin and cozens by design.
We killed off 2 more years of okposos terrible contract and our stars all aged another year.

It's time here in Buffalo. Minimum 90 points next year

- Boss34

Not sure 90 points is in order but one thing is for sure, this team hasn't been motivated in years, hopefully our new coach can lite a fire under some bodies.

I also think our team leader needs to kick some young guys in the butt (cough, Mitts, cough) and educate them on the importance of off season preparation.

Nolan deserves zero blame.
The cards were stacked against him , on purpose.

You must remember the mceichel draft right?

Bylsma was average to below

Phail was terrible. How can you defend him?

- Boss34

He deserves zero blame because he never should have been hired in the first place.

Jesse Granger

Projecting KHL superstar Nikita Gusev’s possible impact on the Golden Knights

Gusev was better in the KHL than Panarin, Radulov & Dadonov. @domluszczyszyn model projects his worth at 1.6-1.8 wins, which is similar to Alex Tuch & Erik Haula.

@Gerbe
I don’t know who domluszcyszyn is, but his model says Gusev is probably worth $4M per year.

if its short term why the hell not..

Good post

This team is still all about eichel.

Vesey should get along with eichel.

What?

Nolan was hired to lose? Should have the Sabres hired a good coach to come in 3rd last ?

Tim Murray signed a bunch of guys to contracts that we are desperate to get out from under. That's why this roster sucks so hard in the first place.

The last thing I need Jason Botterill to do is give even more guys contracts that we will be desperate to get out from under before they are half over.

- buffalofan19

EXACTLY

Good Post. Desperate moves to make us a little better now, would ultimately prevent us from getting where we wanna be

That roster was well on its way to last place regardless of who was behind the bench. I don't buy it.

They hired an under-qualified folk hero to try to get back in good graces with the blue-collar fanbase. And the blue-collar fanbase ate it up...for a few months.

Ah yes the old Tim Murray thing.

The next person that mentiones Murray I hope they get kicked in the nuts 100 times.

Just because Murray was a bad GM does not mean Botts will also be.

Also can someone tell me other than Bobrovsky what deals were “asinine, lunacy” as you all are putting it.

- ImThatGuy

I mean, if it takes A GM four (4) season to turn around a roster and ownership knew that to be the timeline...
they should have poop-canned said GM for three years and let the existing Equipment Manager also manage the roster for those 3 years, lol. Would have achieved much the same results...maybe even yielded a high pick this draft year.

Donskoi is yet another low middle 6 (with the emphasis on LOW) forward that does minimal needle moving to get this team towards the playoffs. Career high 14 goals and under 40 points, all while playing on a pretty loaded team.

And to get him here over Colorado, we'd have had to do what, boys and mitch's? That's right.

Overpay.

No more bad contracts.

This is very exciting

- jcragcrumple

It’s not like it’s doffic for ya to say what moves you’d have liked

Zuccarello at 6mil... f that
Jt Miller for a 1st & 3rd... hell no
Hayes for 7mil... hahaha

But OMG we missed out on Donskoi
Guess what... whether he’s here or not, we are still roughly the same team

Overpaying mid tier talent doesn’t get us closer to the Cup

How does signing a Jordie Benn (2mil)
Or a Gustav Nyquist(5.5) prevent this team from getting better?

NyQuist could ride 2nd line and be the veteran presence we need.

Benn at 2mil is the perfect 3rd pair d-man.

It would be pure speculation on my part.

Hope you're right about the 90 points. Looks pretty lofty at the moment

Jersey got better, Florida got better, rangers got better, flyers got better

CBJ got worse

Lot of teams getting better in the east. As is, this roster is near the bottom of the east

Toronto got better, somehow.

Tampa is still Tampa.
Boston is still Boston.

As of right now I have the Sabres only ahead of Ottawa in the Atlantic.

We didn’t get better?

We added at the very least an incredibly good middle-bottom pairing D man who potentially be Dahlin’s partner

And a 15-20 goal 3rd line winger, which isn’t the 3rd and 4th line something you incessantly complained about for the last 3 years?

I’m not sure what you people want. He’s resigned Skinner, which was huge. Added depth pieces.

Major FA signings are 80-90% of the time a terrible idea

I mean, I don't know how this isn't a thing. Find a midget to kick me in the nuts I guess, but if you start a new job with one hand tied behind your back it's not like you have much of a chance for early success. I'm not saying that Botts is a good GM or not, I'm saying to pretend that he should have already shed the garbage and rolled the parade through DT is asinine at best. Right or wrong, the Buffalo Sabres should follow a plan all the way through. Murray's plan hit a dead end, that's why a new path must be taken. He tried the shortcut route, now they're trying a more methodical route, getting the kids marinating in Roch (just like WB-S for the Pens during Botts time there). You cut that short just to hire another approach guy, you'll never get anywhere. We all want to see a winner. I can tell you right now changing strategies drastically every 2/3 years will never provide that.

Toronto has made moves and has maybe gotten worse

Ceci is terrible
Barrie has been at replacement level for 2 years

People talking about Murray are correct. You want moves just to make moves

This team will compete by building through the draft, and actually drafting well

The contract for Bob is a complete poop show, but they did get better at the position.

As for whether we got better, Vesey replaces Pommer, and Miller adds a win or two. Coaching hopefully got better. Idk, how much better are we?

Benn would’ve been ok, if he’d sign here & if we didn’t have a ton of defensemen
Are u really upset about a 3rd pair defenseman though???

Would Nyquist have signed with us?
And at that price?
I believe our experts said we were talking to him
So maybe we tried & he just didn’t wanna come here
Are his 20ish goals a difference maker though?
He’s a pretty decent player, but Detroit was more than happy to let him go and they’re in a similar position as us trying to build their team up
I don’t think missing on him is a great loss

But fine, let’s just play it out
Let’s just say we did add Nyquist & Benn
What’s your prediction for this year?
1st round exit to TB or BOS at best, right?

And then we’ve got at least 7.5mil more,
(but probably more like 10mil with Buffatax),
that prevents us from trying to get Point, Marner, or whatever top end talent might be available
