Wouldn't get anything for him in a trade, if his number is too high from the arbitrator, let him walk. - bixll
There would be at least a dozen teams who would take him at $500,000 in real money on a one year contract.
I wouldn't want anything in return - just clear the cap hit.

League Mini is $ 700,000 I believe. Either way, let him walk. |

And he won't go to the arbitrator - he knows the Leafs would walk.
The Senators qualified him at $4.3 million.
Roomer is that the Leafs have already verbally agreed to 1 year, $4.5 million.
However, I don't think I have to tell anyone here that sometimes hockey roomers aren't necessarily true. |

If we can fit him under the cap, I'd prefer to do The Law Solution ® - Give him a $4 million signing bonus, $500,000 salary. Trade him the next day.
Bring in Jake at $4 million for 1 year - and a chance to prove his back isn't wonky. - Atomic Wedgie
Jake Gardiner will not sign a 1 year contract. Teams are also weary of his back issues. |

I like it.
or
Rielly - Barrie
Muzzin - Liljegren
Harpur - Ceci
then ultimately:
Rielly - Barrie
Muzzin - Liljegren
Dermott - Ceci - MCharisma91
Ceci's going to play with Rielly because he's a "Defensive Specialist" or some poop. |

League Mini is $ 685,000 I believe. Either way, let him walk. - bixll
He'd be getting $4.5 million:
$4 million signing bonus on July 4th.
Trade him July 5th.
$500,000 in residual salary.
Cap hit is $4.5 million, but Arizona only has to pay him $500,000 in actual dollars.
It's a win-win. |

I thought he had filed for Arbitration. Which would be a get out of jail card. |

Can a team win a cup with eleven players making under 800,000? We shall see - Hardbalz
You mean a 4th line, a bottom pairing and a backup goalie ....
And the answer is yes. All teams prior to 1999 or so .... |

Nope.
I know.
Crushing.
Although maybe we just need to give this guy a chance. Maybe with a little bit of encouragement, he can gain some confidence and play like...aaaaa...
....oh frank, I can't do it.
Damn.
Ceci sucks. |

Dubas can't walk. Ottawa gave him a qualifying offer, which the Leafs have to honour. |

I'm confused. I thought Ceci was going to arbitration? Can't Dubas walk away from what the arbitrator awards him? |

Yes, I see what you are saying. You are correct. You just have to wait until the arbitrator has settled the dispute or case. |

Leafs are going to have $20M+ next year in available cap space (maybe a bit less if Kerfoot gets signed for more than 1 year) with only a backup and more cheap forwards outside of D to sign.
Resigning Barrie, Muzzin and Dermott is not completely out of the question, though if I had to guess we'll likely lose Muzz to FA.
At least one of Lily and Sandin are definitely on the team next year though, if not both, still at their ELCs for 2 and 3 years respectively.
Dubas has pulled off some serious magic. |

Lemme lay it out for you:
- Ottawa gave him a qualifying offer of $4.3 million. This allowed them to retain his rights (yeah, not sure why they did that). Ceci has not yet accepted this offer, but I believe he can sorta kinda keep that on the side, and ultimately just accept it at a time of his choosing. Not 100% sure on the timing.
- Ceci can elect to go to arbitration. If the arbitrator awards him a contract bigger than his last one, the Leafs have the option of walking away. The general thinking in the hockey world (from what I've read) is that Ceci must know that he isn't going to get $4.3 million on the open market, so he's not going to ask for arbitration.
- The Leafs can elect to take him to arbitration. The hockey world agrees this is suicide - arbitration is Christmas in July/August for players. Like, every single franking time. But if the Leafs are the ones who asked for arbitration, they DO NOT have the option of walking away.
It's all moot anyways, as apparently the Leafs and Ceci have verbally agreed to one year, $4.5 million - just waiting for Greedy Mitch to sign. |
