Lemme lay it out for you:
- Ottawa gave him a qualifying offer of $4.3 million. This allowed them to retain his rights (yeah, not sure why they did that). Ceci has not yet accepted this offer, but I believe he can sorta kinda keep that on the side, and ultimately just accept it at a time of his choosing. Not 100% sure on the timing.
- Ceci can elect to go to arbitration. If the arbitrator awards him a contract bigger than his last one, the Leafs have the option of walking away. The general thinking in the hockey world (from what I've read) is that Ceci must know that he isn't going to get $4.3 million on the open market, so he's not going to ask for arbitration.
- The Leafs can elect to take him to arbitration. The hockey world agrees this is suicide - arbitration is Christmas in July/August for players. Like, every single franking time. But if the Leafs are the ones who asked for arbitration, they DO NOT have the option of walking away.
It's all moot anyways, as apparently the Leafs and Ceci have verbally agreed to one year, $4.5 million - just waiting for Greedy Mitch to sign. - Atomic Wedgie
They do if the award from the arbitrator is over 4.3 or 4.5.... or who cares... FFS |

Only if the player is the one who asked for arbitration.
If the team is the one who initiated the arbitration hearing, it is binding.
https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/538417
The decision of the arbitrator is binding, although teams can walk away from an award in excess of $3.5 million if the salary arbitration hearing was player-elected (note: that $3.5 million figure is adjusted annually by the same percentage as the increase in average league salary, so the walk away limit is probably several $100,000 higher than $3.5 million this time around).
Clubs cannot walk away from a salary arbitration hearing they've elected. |

This is where the misunderstanding resides. It was reported that there was a verbal $4.5 agreement. It was then later reported that Ceci is going to arbitration, which basically implies that there was no verbal agreement.
If there was a verbal commitment from Dubas, then he does want Ceci here, and our attempts to trade him will be nothing but screaming into the void - like everything else we say on here.
If there wasn't a verbal commitment and he is indeed going to Arbitration, we can walk away from anything.
Edit: Anything over the lower limit, but I think Ceci by his QO exceeds that lower limit. |

Yeah, we can debate this all day, but we'd be better off practicing our line for 82 games next year:
"Oh FFS, what the frank was Ceci doing? Dang nabbit, I wish we still had Gardiner!!!"

This makes sense. Allowing teams to walk away from awards when they file for arbitration would just be abused to get rid of players.

I've done a quick googling, but I can't find the 2019 limit anywhere.
Apparently he has until July 5th to elect to go to arbitration, so we won't have to wait long to find out his intentions. |

Yeah, of course. Would be pretty great if a team could just take a player to arbitration and walk away if they don't like the number...
It's rare that a player asks for less or even what he is worth so that would be a win win for the team to be able to take to arbitration and walk away if they don't like the number. |

Pension Plan Puppets had a funny little idea:
If Ceci elects to go to arbitration, the Leafs should put in their offer higher than the threshold that allows him to walk away.
This would guarantee the arbitrator awards above the threshold, and we would be Ceciless for the 2019-20 season. |

He'd be getting $4.5 million:
$4 million signing bonus on July 4th.
Trade him July 5th.
$500,000 in residual salary.
Cap hit is $4.5 million, but Arizona only has to pay him $500,000 in actual dollars.
It's a win-win. - Atomic Wedgie

Hedman was absolutely (frank)ing awful against Columbus.
My favourite part was when, after getting walked around multiple times by Columbus players and them chirping him for it, Hedman tried to talk back but was almost in tears. |
