One thing to consider is that "Ceci's money" is potentially what keeps Muzzin and/or Barrie in 2020 and beyond.

the other thing to consider is the Seattle expansion draft 2 years from now.

3 of: Rielly - Dermott - Muzzin - Barrie can be protected
Sandin and Lillybust don't need to be protected.

7 of: Matthews-Marner-Tavares-Kapanen-Johnsson-Hyman-Nylander-Moore can be protected on FW.

Andersen needs a new contract so doesn't need to be protected.

Leafs seem quite well set up for that expansion draft (although a lot of things can change in 2 years).
However, if they want to keep those 4 D-men; need to work out a deal with Seattle.

I think Leafs will want to keep Barrie and keep Muzzin unprotected (if they would resign him) since 3 years older than Barrie.

this is why you can't sign Gardiner for anything more than 1 year....

his offensive game virtually disappeared in the 2nd half this year... and there are young LHD coming to replace him.

it would be financially irresponsible for Dubas to sign Gardiner.

Apparently Buffalo and Gardiner are working on a deal.

Should I be worried?

Its been pretty kawhiet out there lately.

MLSE’s Private jet is slated to arrive from LAX to Toronto in about 30 minutes, per source. Masai and Bobby Webster are already in Toronto. Take that as you will.

He is scheduled to meet with the Raptors today, so I am not sure this means anything.

He could be the best #5 defenceman in the league.

Play him higher and you are spinning the Russian roulette wheel.

let's stir things up a bit...

This is a good point. If Dermott continues to progress, you probably would expose Muzzin out of that group - assuming we could keep them all together.

Ideally Sandin and Liljegren take huge steps and are NHL ready and our option on who to keep at the end of 2020 is easier.

Muzzin will be 32. Under that scenario, seems like a good result to expose him.

I liked him for what he was, what made it easier to put up with. He's a fast, high risk offensive d-man who will contribute but surely get caught at times. However his contributions were overshadowed by knuckle head moves occurring at the worst times. Similar to Kadri. I do believe think Gardiner haters will notice his loss more than they think, but for likely 6 mill + a year, it's easier to palate.

fast

meh, Roman Polak is probably faster, I'd say Gardiner is more shifty then speedy.

This is a good point. I don't know if he slowed down (maybe his back was ailing him most of last year?), but last year I really noticed that Gardiner wasn't really fast. He was just smooth. But he never caught anyone.

on how valuable Marner is - imagine a fantasy draft for whole NHL.
in my list of players I would pick, Marner would definitely be top10, probably top5.
So that's a strong indicator on what his contract should come in at - contracts are representative of player's value (point potential, age, future trade value, etc.).

1/ McDavid
2/ Matthews
3/ Barkov
4/ McKinnon
5/ Marner*
6/ Barzal
7/ Pettersson
8/ Jack Hughes
9/ Scheifele
10/Draisaitl

* --> yes, Marner is the only winger on this list. I would doubt between picking between Barzal, Pettersson and Marner - but definitely one of first 7 picks for me.

I like the moves.

zaitsuck and his albatross contract gone, ceci can hopefully replace him in the 4-6 spot
barrie>gardiner for half the price
kadri>kerfoot, but kerfoot cheaper
I like brown but he was overpaid and replaceable
spezza feels wrong, but it's 750k! last washed up former star we signed cost 18M

Hyman's age might get him out of that protection list - but if he keeps on playing like he did last seasons, I would personally definitely keep him over Kapanen and in particular Johnsson. And I am very high on Moore - really think he can be a top6 FW.

Obviously anything like this is heavily debatable, but are you talking in terms of point production? Impact to the team? You're considering forwards only?

Maybe if Jumbo Joe doesn't get an offer he'll come play for us for $700k.

Just send Spezza to the Marlies.

Where's Kucherov? He's probably #1 or #2 in the league right now.
