Can the Leafs even match a 10.5M offer sheet? Giving up 2 firsts, a 2nd and a 3rd for Marner is not a bad trade at all. - AK27
Let's say Leafs let Marner walk. Who are they spending 10.5 Mil in cap space on this year? Do they sign Laine or Connor to an offer sheet? Avs have cap space galore so makes no sense to go after Raantanen. |

OMG.
That is a horrible trade for fack sacks.
Jesus, Marner is worth much more to the leafs than 2 1st, 2nd and a 3rd.
The leafs are in win mode right now...not build mode.
No one is offer sheeting marner. |

I don't think the Leafs can offer sheet anyone, they don't have the picks available to do so. |

I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as you think it is.
Nelson was projected to go for $4.9m over 6 years. He went for $6m.
Lee was projected to go for $6.5m over 7 years. He went for $6m.
Eberle was projected to go for $5.6m over 5 years. He went for $5.5m.
That's $1.5m in "overpayment", but the market has been overall more aggressive than projected.
Varlamov is probably about where I would figured. The only difference is that I would have kept Lehner if I were them.
The worst contracts on the Islanders, in my opinion, are Boychuk and Greiss, and Lou didn't give them out. - Monkeypunk
It's not what is "Projected", it's what you are building for years to come. Like Marleau and Zaitsev, he overpays for supporting pieces. Dubas lets those guys walk and spends his $ primarily on a young core of stars. |

Seems like tsn put the clamps on anymore marner dregers being dropped on twatter under their name.
Paul marner has moved on to using other desperate wanabe insiders like pagnota and ek. - Tumbleweed
Therr was a lot of "I turn the dial when Dreger comes on" comments on Twitter. That's scary for TSN. |

Sure, but Nelson is 27. Eberle and Lee are 29. Lee's contract may stretch until he's a little longer in the tooth, but he'll still only be 35/36.
None of the contracts are untradeable either. They're at a decent AAV. I'm not a gigantic fan of any of these players either, but they were a piece of a successful Islanders team last year, and the coach and GM thought they should return.
It's not about Lou vs. Dubas anymore. Lou has his team that came with its challenges. Dubas has his team that has its challenges.
We don't have a lot of guys entering their UFA years to consider. Dubas let Gardiner walk because he couldn't afford him, but if we had more room under the cap, I think he would have tendered him an offer. |

Ok, I'm just making the point he is tying-up a considerable amount of players Dubas would let walk. That aren't "Core Pieces" at all. And trading them means moving potential picks over and over.
He had a ton of cap this summer. I think he's blown it.
BTW, Dubas also let JVR, ozak and Komorov walk. |

I think many would argue that Lee, Nelson and to a lesser extent Eberle are parts of the Islanders core.
With the capmageddon of Marner, Nylander, and Matthews all looming, JVR and Bozak were likely never even considerations for extension at their expected prices and term. But they were less "core" as well.
I think the Komorov signing by Lou was a poor decision, especially at $3m for 4 years. |
