Let's say Leafs let Marner walk. Who are they spending 10.5 Mil in cap space on this year? Do they sign Laine or Connor to an offer sheet? Avs have cap space galore so makes no sense to go after Raantanen. - gergeswillems
Michael Ferland x 1
Patrick Maroon x 1
Dan Girardi x 1
Hold the remaining cap space to avoid putting Horton on LTIR until absolutely necessary to avoid overages seeping into next year and add a player at deadline.

They can offer sheet anyone they want...cap not withstanding - reefguy69
With next year first going to Carolina and unless the Leafs don't make the playoff they can offer sheet a player but said player would need to sign it and the compensation would be a 2nd rnd pick . |

Or they can trade for their 1st from Carolina, but that doesn't make much sense. |

Let's say the Leafs match a 10.5M offer sheet, they will have to trade some contracts to be below the cap before the season starts right? |

depends on the communication between Marner's camp and Dubas.
Marner only signs an offersheet with a team he wants to play for (again, I don't think it will be NYI, but we'll see).
the offersheet option is much more interesting for Marner because:
1/ he gets to pick his contract (team he would be traded to still need to agree on a contract with him)
2/ he gets to pick the team ; Toronto or offersheet team X. (in a trade, Leafs would hold all the cards).
I personally think that if Marner signs with NYI, leafs should let him go.
If he signs with a big team (NYR/MTL) then Leafs should match.
Reasoning is that I can understand signing with one of these other original six teams where it is really not only about money, but as well as being part of something big (like in Toronto) - while signing an offersheet with NYI shows his motivations are different (money, being in NYC, maybe being on same team with Martin his friend (?) , etc.).
so I could respect him signing an offersheet with MTL/NYR, not with NYI - so you let him go in the latter case. - MaximusAurelius

Nope.
Hortons LTIR.
And also with dermott and Hyman being out the leafs will have about 3-4 million in space. |

The draft picks must available in the nearest entry draft, unless the compensation requires two or more draft picks in the same round: an extra year can be used to for compensation for these picks (if two 1st round picks are required, the club must have two 1st round picks available in the next three drafts)

I figured out cap friendlys higher cap estimate...
They have 13 forwards, 8 d and 2 goalchies...not counting marner. So cap space is actually 4.7ish plus hortons ltir. So 10 is the magic number.
That's for the poster in the last thread that was confused why his number was different. - mykokes
is there some clause in the CBA ... you can over by 5 - 10% during the summer? |

Yes. You can go 10% over, and you can also place a player who will not play on the team in the first 2 weeks of the season on LTIR during the off-season as well. |

put an offer sheet in on Brandon Carlo if Marner signs elsewhere. Bruins will no doubt sign McAvoy as their priority or offer sheet Mantha from Detroit... or Edmondson from St. Louis
this presumes you would have 4 first round pics coming ... and therefore have collateral to position trades
before going after more know quantities like Ferland.
