Oh, no, heaven forbid he gets 70+ points! - RogerRoeper
If he was the Kawhi Leonard of the NHL, sure, no problem.
But he's not.
He's gonna put up points, be a defensive liability and then walk with a fat wallet. |

Can we just enjoy this season. Every team faces these issues.
I'm tired of hearing about cap hits and Leafs can't afford anyone, blah, blah, blah. They always keep who they truly want.
I'd rather have Barrie at 8 than Muzzin at 6. Truth is, Barrie is worth 8 if he has another great year. - RogerRoeper
Leaf fans 2 days before FA
“JT is coming to Toronto”
Everyone
“You stupid laffs fans there is no chance. Stop being stupid you have no idea if he’s going to sign there”
Everyone
“Matthews and Marner will leave in FA. Barrie and Muzzin will walk”
Blah blah blah it’s all crap just smile and nod.

Big surprise, Barrie wants 8 AAV as a UFA next year.
So, as predicted, he's either going to be overpaid or a 1 year rental.
- JohnFergusonJr
His career PPG is similar to Burns, and he’s younger than what Burns was when he signed for 8x8. Not to mention inflation. |

I know. When I hear non-stop it's a bad trade because Barrie is 100% gone it's funny. Leafs actually do have cap next year. The people Leafs let walk, are rather one-dimensional players they can live without. They basically told JVR we're not going to bother to offer you a contract. |

Honestly same people whining and hand wringing, and the same sorry trolls here goin on and on.
Really is here, much ado about nothing so... offseason ain't done yet and Dubas has been doing a decent job, lets just see how he finishes and how the team looks going into the season. |

There is no Kawhi Leonard in the NHL. No hockey player can be on the ice for 90% of the game and turn a team from marginal to champs. |

A lot of Leaf fans don't even discuss actual on ice play anymore. It's all cap hits and offersheets.
How many hours was spent talking about teams lining-up to give Mitch Marner offerheets? |

Except Burns is a wookie on skates and has won the Norris.
Please don't try to compare Barrie to Burns. |

Here's my prediction based on Kyle Dubas-Jake Muzzin is 100% gone and won't be offered a contract. If Barrie has a huge year, he will be given a great deal.
Dubas identities core players who fit with today's NHL and bids adieu to replaceable pieces. Muzzin is too old and too slow. Lou would run to overpay Muzzin. |

In fairness Burns is not at all very good defensively and is basically a forward. If he played on Toronto you'd hear that much more. |

I'm well aware of Burns' trouble in his own zone.
That being said, he still won a Norris and he is still a wookie on skates who can score 20+ goals a season.
Barrie isn't in that category and shouldn't be paid as such. |

I think Dermott slots into Muzzin's 3 hole quite easily. Dermott's quicker, has a bit of snarl too.
Ceci's the only big question mark on D and whether we can actually convert into a reliable top 4 option. If so, extend him for a couple of years; if not, move him at the deadline or let him walk.
In the bottom 6, there's a ton of fodder there and one of them should pan out to be a surprise and stick at the NHL level until Lillybust or Sandin are ready. |

Yeah but Burns would get 10 if he signed today. Salaries are going up yearly. I think John Tavares wouldn't settle for 11 this year with the Leafs. It's even gone up over 12 months. |

There's this thing called reality that you may not be familiar with. It's the same uncanny force in the universe that governs contracts.
In other words, just because Barrie (reportedly, from non other than Mr. Unreliable himself: Steve Simmons) asks for 8M, doesn't mean he's going to get it.
And an 8 year UFA deal is going to be above replacement/market value, so there's always going to be a risk, even with sure-thing UFAs like Tavares or Burns. |

Aren't Muzzin and Barrie similar ages?
Also, Muzzin was a Dubas acquisition. If the number is too high he obviously walks away, but I have to imagine Dubas will try to resign him at a reasonable $$ figure.

Dubas acquired him for a season and a half. I'm sure he didn't think beyond that just yet. Not sure if it's possible to get him for that rerasonable.
Barrie is a similar age, but great skater and almost 3 years younger. |
