And I suppose it’s a complete stroke of luck that Tavares had a career year his first year in Toronto..

Next time a real team Canada is assembled, Mitch will be riding shotty with McDavid.

That’s pretty much all you need to know.

Career year by 2 points?

If Tavares is the reason Mitch put up the points he did, then why did Mitch put up MORE points?

I’ll wait for your logical response to this. Im sure it’ll change my mind.

Players get paid based on projection, and so far it looks like Mitch is already as good as Tavares, so he should be at least 11mil, no?

RFA vs UFA. Completely different situation.

Good player but doesn't deserve Matthews contract. Matthews doesn't deserve Matthews contract.
- HealthyScratch6

I don’t disagree.

Players are being paid based on projection. Matthews is probably the best 5on5 goal scorer in the game, so it’s pretty close to what he deserves. Mitch should sign 11x5..

That’s been my guess since the end of the season.

It’s not anymore.

Players are getting paid immediately after the elc’s now.

They used to get paid based on their body of work, now it’s based on what they project to be. Which makes more sense.

He needs to stay healthy. I would like to see what he's capable of after a full 82. Projected he should be a top point getter.

So?

Mitch kills penalties, that’s seems like a big responsibility..

- Arctic_AARDVARK

Killing penalties does not move the contract needle at all. Marincin can kill penalties; it's not a skill teams pay for.

Still a career year..

He’ll probably top it next season, and Mitch will probably break the 100pt barrier alongside him.

My point was that Mitch isn’t some one dimensional player, he has a lot of attributes. If he put up 94pts, but slacked on his defensive play, then sure pay him a little less. But he’s really good at both ends (remember those blocked shots in the playoffs) so he’s a complete player

Not his fault Kucherov is a dumbass.
- Arctic_AARDVARK

The Kucherov deal would work out to the same or more than what Mitch is asking for because of the tax implications so......? Marner would lose close to 40-50% of his deal by signing with the Leafs. One of the many reasons why it’s hard for Canadian teams to retain talent.

It doesn't make sense in a cap world. In order for teams to be able to build a team and for everyone to be able to get paid it should be that you have to earn that big contract if not it's just gonna be over priced 22 year olds, guys on entry level and vets making league minimum. Basically the NBA.

I understand that's the way it's going and that's Edmonton's fault for starting it and partially Dubas fault for the Matthews contract.

I have a solution...just trade Marner and Horton to the Devils for Hall (6mil) and Vatanen (4.8mil) (I would even throw in a pick) ....Hall gets to play for a winner and would re-sign next year and we get a young winger to go with either Nico or Hughes. Win win

You’ll see more player movement for sure..

Which will be an overall good thjnknfor the league.

Hall asks for 13m or walks so leafs end up with with an older more expensive player or no one. I hope that pick is the 1st overall

Movement isn't good if you can't hold onto your own good players. Leafs should of been set up to compete for the next 10 years but because of Matthews and marners contract they're probably gonna have to blow it up in 3 when Rielly and others need to be paid

These big money 2nd contracts aren’t new, though. Ovechkin, Backstrom, Crosby, Malkin, Toews, Kane, Stamkos.

But that's a hard pass on Mitch at 11.

Same here and I 100% agree.

With Hall, it’s practically guaranteed to be the #1 pick.

I believe Hall cannot ask more then JT or Matthews is worth, probably the same. He'll be playing on a stacked team, he's never played on a winning team (except the year he had to be a MVP for his team to make it). He might actually take less to stay with Toronto then lets say re-sign with the Devils or another lower team. Just imagine him having JT as his center...it would be unfair. He wins there he's staying for sure.

Tax situation is overblown when you consider that these guys all get paid in USD and live in Canada giving them an extra 30 cents on the dollar in buying power. You wanna buy a 1.3 million dollar condo in Toronto well that will only cost you 1 million USD.

I would throw in a 1st (not sure Shero would) but it would have to be some protections like 1-5 at least.

Everyone takes less to play in Toronto.
