I’d say Labanc desperately needs a new agent. That’s a ridiculous contract. But sure, let’s celebrate Doug Wilson for being a genius because Labanc has a crap agent! |

Good for Wilson even having the balls to offer 1m, let alone it being accepted. Imagine the conversation starting with a league min offer and the it being negotiated to 1m instead. |

Sound to me like the kid is betting on himself having another great year so he can knock one out of the park with a real big contract next year. - Mashadar
Betting on yourself is fine by taking 1 year
after 57 points, that 1 year should still be worth 2, or 3, or 4 million
He got terrible advice or the Sharks have negotiated a wink, wink, nudge, nudge deal to keep this years cap hit down (illegal, btw)
If he miraculously extends in January for 4 years 20 million then you know there was some shady business
NHL needs to have a close look at this deal |

Yeah, "Good job, Mr Wilson." This isn't even in the same universe as a fair market deal. Double this deal wouldn't be fair market. I can't imagine that other teams, let alone the Player's Association are going to be good with an attempt this blatant to circumvent the salary cap. Perhaps 'Mr Wilson' will be told he that he's not allowed to spend whatever he wants and then work an under the table deal to get out of (cap) jail free while everyone else has to adhere to the cap. |

So the Sharks could have signed Pavelski after all...
Who are they gonna spend their cap on now? Marleau? |
|
|
|
So ummm... yeah, awesome deal... seems super sketchy though |

Thornton (2M) and Marleau (1M) will likely sign too to fill out the third line. |

exactly, just isn't right, unless they have agreed on a rich deal next season, just can't see that ... |

Then mid season he will get a career ending injury.....what a huge gamble. Chances are very low but still. |

I read where a Labanc said no team ever contacted him to even discuss a possible offer sheet. One of the other 30 teams could have offered up to 1.4 mil with no compensation or up tp 2.1 for a 3rd round pick. It’s really hard to explain beyond collusion. With SJ having cap problems, matching would not be automatic. Even if they did, what harm would it do to force a rival to pay more than they want to for a player? |

The weird thing is that agents are allowed to reach out, so "Nobody called me" doesn't really hold water. I guarantee 29 other GM's are interested in 23 year old 57 point players and can offer more than 1 million
Did his agent not contact ANYONE and mention the term and price range his client was looking for??? |

I bet that Doug has something up his sleeve in regards to this contract and the team. Granted Kevin scored 56 points last year and has trended up each year but the fact is, he only had a great 2nd half of last year. He had been admonished and benched for poor defensive play, taking too many penalties etc and challenged by the coaching staff to show he belonged in the NHL. I had him pegged as a $2.75mm contract so this is a godsend..for 1 year.
If you review last years original plans, where Doug tried to land Tavares at $13mm a year as the new, younger #1C for the franchise, it was apparent that there was no way he could afford to pay Pavs market value for this year; not with the other new contracts kicking in this year. His plan was to have Tavares as #1C and Burns as #1D..but no Tavares allowed him to get Karlsson and have two #1 D's instead.
Watch to see if an offer sheet is submitted on Marner, because there are some great possibilities on improving the team to Doug's original plan of acquiring a new #1C if one should materialize. |

If his agent had a behind closed doors kickback for keeping his mouth shut, I can believe it. 10% of 4 mil a year is 400k... but 1 mil, that's not against the cap, to keep quiet. Easy money. |

Your username is hockeygm and you think the Sharks have the cap space to offer sheet Marner? |
