Who is going to the Leafs/Hawks in these deals?

Neither team has the space to just take on a large contract.

- ImThatGuy

Anisimov, Nylander and perhaps Murphy and a 1st - both teams have the space, they just have to find it...

Of course William could be headed to the Hawks to make room for Marner, and that package would work in that trade scenario too (overkill but the Have what it takes to get his brother).

William Nylander or Mitch Marner will be Blackhawks in the fall.....

This trade only makes sense if William is coming to the Hawks or Alex is traded to the Leafs for the RFA rights to Marner....

- Savard2Secord

Not really

It makes sense of both players were unhappy and their agents let it be known to each team and help facilitate this change.

seems pretty ridiculous.

Not a good trade at first glance.

More from Powers:

This trade is ultimately about where the Blackhawks projected Jokiharju. As much as they were working to develop him this season in Chicago and Rockford, they were also assessing him. There were questions about his play in the defensive zone. Some thought he was soft and retreated from physical play. One source said they felt his hockey IQ had allowed him to make that early step into the NHL, but there was a concern how much further he could go.

You don’t trade young players you envision being top-4 defensemen. You especially don’t trade them if you’re the Blackhawks, who haven’t developed a young top-4 defenseman in some time. Jokiharju is 20 years old and entering the second year of his entry-level contract. You wouldn’t trade him unless you already made up your mind about him. It’s obvious the Blackhawks did just that.

https://theathletic.com/1070051/2019/07/09/powers-trying-to-understand-why-the-blackhawks-traded-henri-jokiharju/

"“I guess maybe the progression of a lot of our other young defensemen to where we feel we’ve built up a good stable of young players and now we have the ability to make a move like this,” Bowman said. “It’s not easy to acquire talented players like Alex. He’s somebody we scouted, remember back in the draft year, we didn’t have a first-round pick that year. But we were very impressed with him. He’s a guy we had a lot of time for, and we knew we weren’t going to be able to draft him, drafting in the second round. But he’s such a high-skilled, talented player. So when those are the situations you’re looking at, trying to acquire someone like that, trying to acquire someone like that, you have to deal from a position of strength. Certainly with the progression of (Ian) Mitchell and (Adam) Boqvist, it’s nice to see how they’ve taken strides this year, much like Henri has. So it’s really more the depth of our defense prospects made this a move we were able to make. I guess that’s probably the simple answer to why we were able to do this now as opposed to a year ago at this time.”

"Just like the Blackhawks deciding on Kirby Dach over Alex Turcotte and Bowen Byram with the third overall pick in this year’s draft, this is another decision by Bowman that will be analyzed for many years. Public opinion isn’t on his side right now. Many, including myself, saw a future top-4 defenseman in Jokiharju. The Blackhawks apparently didn’t, and that’s why Jokiharju was traded Tuesday even if it seemed surprising."

- EnzoD

So let Buffalo draft him, wait a few years and trade for him and then bring him into the system like you drafted him 8th overall...

As a Hawks fan, this trade seems crazy but who knows.....

Maybe they believe "this is the year" and he can contribute?? I'm no scout, so perhaps Alex really worked hard and is profoundly skilled but just needs a guy like Kane, Toews or _____ to find his groove in the NHL....

Honestly, this move would have made more sense if it was:

Jokiharju, Anisimov for Nylander + prospect/picks

--

Anisimov is a useful player but his time in Chicago seems to be coming to an end.

If he can't score in the AHL, and his work ethic sucks, why would you ever think he'll become a great NHL scorer.

This makes zero sense, especially for a club with a historically lousy blueline that's arguably only marginally improved from last season.

Doesn't make a bit of sense.

Wouldn’t call it marginally, I would say upgraded

I second your skepticism William T. Sherman. This seems to really be a case of rolling the dice--short term, they have a surplus of defenseman (though I am not sure, really, how strong the defense is overall), so it might be easy to deal Jokiharu now. If Nylander works out, this will look great. My hunch is, however, that he won't be all that Wiz has him cracked up to be, and then Jokiharu turns out to be a solid 3-4 defenseman and many folks won't remember.

Re. Wiz's optimism, he can't spell or put a sentence together either (you're not alone 1977).

They must have believed Joker had profound flaws in his game (I didn't see much out of the ordinary for his age) or Stan is in love with Alex Nylander and really really really wants him in the system and thinks he can make the team and feels the 2 players are comparable........ I mean Joker isn't a prospect, but Nylander is.... Of course maybe Bowman sees Nylander wasting away in the Buffalo system when he could succeed with the Hawks so.....

That's what they said when they signed Hossa....

Don't get me wrong the Hawks/Stan and Co. may just be high on Alex Nylander too...

I'm just a fan making speculations.

I don’t know, I still see Jokiharju as a prospect 1/2 a season doesn’t make him a solid top four Dman.

I can’t really say much about him, haven’t seen him play at all. But somebody must have seen something to take him 8th overall in 2016.

StanBo should fire the scouts who gave him these reports on Nylander. And if these are his conclusions, I barely know what to say.

So Botterill just acquired a 19-yo RH D-man with huge potential that Joel Quenneville loved -- for a guy who likely didn't figure in the #Sabres' plans. Boy, Bowman & Colliton better know something nobody else does. Otherwise, I have zero clue what #Blackhawks are doing here.
