Not one player making over 8 million last season:

Boston
St. Louis
San Jose
Carolina
Colorado
Columbus
NY Islanders

Dallas was the only team last season to make it to the second round with a player making over 8 million.

If Marner signs anything north of 11 (and that's still high), let him walk. Flip some of your newly acquired 4 first rounders for a replacement.

What if it’s 5/10.5m?

should I go on?

I don't think it's the only way. I offered zero commentary, just stated a fact. I think it's interesting.

Which brings up another question. Is it really wise to have him playing with Matthews and Johnsson? I see other teams hammering the sh!t out of that line.
- aminnes

I can see Matthews taking the puck away from other lines and shooting it into their net.

When did their highest paid players sign their most recent deals, what percentage of the cap did those deals represent at the time, and how old are those players?

Of course. There are lots of factors. I do think it's important to not have overpaid players though. San Jose is now getting imbalanced with what they are spending on defence going into next year. Boston and St. Louis should be able to keep rolling as their guys are all signed.

For sure, pulling off the balance under the cap is the trick. If the Leafs big tickets don't deliver value they are screwed.

Pretty much..

It’s crazy the lengths ppl will go to make an arbitrary point.

If there’s any piece a team need to win a Cup, it’s a legit 1D.

We have that in Rielly, so Leafs are legit contenders imo.

The only question is, can they persevere adversity? Can they manage momentum shifts? Fwiw, they’ve made tremendous progress imo closing games out. Before AM/MM they used to blow games like a hooker in Sudbury.

Correct me if I am wrong but aren't you one of those on here saying give Marner whatever he wants?
I 100% agree you can't have too many overpaid players.

I think the only blew one game last year after the 2nd.

Might have been in OT too.

Opposed to blowing pretty much every game 3 years ago, lol..

To me that’s progress. They have the confidence now.

Yep. He said the Leafs should even match a 12.5 offersheet.

Have to now. Club already set the precedent. I would however trade away one of the overpaid guys, Nylander.

Teams would line up all day to pay Marner 11. But not at the extra cost of picks. I am starting to think the other gms will just grab some popcorn and watch the Leafs comedy show

It takes time to learn how to win.

Now it is time for a playoff run. Caps was a good learning experience. Boston round 1 Boston was the better team. Boston round 2 there was no excuse...

Time to win.

I’m honestly surprised they haven’t yet..

I get why dubas wants to keep him, but I don’t think he can, especially long-term.

Maybe no one wants him at that cap hit. Maybe teams are saying they want the Leafs to eat 1.9 million per year.

Nylander is not overpaid, not even a little. However the leafs will need to reallocate money from up front to the back end. Nylander is the only expendable player that also clears up the cap space we need.
