The idea is that teams dont always play their best center or wingers on the "first" line, especially if the teams best player is a winger
- bulet13

If they dont understand something this simple by now it's best to just not waste your breath explaining it anymore

Says the guy who argued on end that Hayes is a second line center?

Brayden Schenn played center on the top line for the majority of the season and the playoffs for the St Louis Blues. However, most would agree Schenn isn’t the Blues number one center.

Calling someone a #1 this or #2 that is often meaningless. It’s all about usage. I prefer having, if possible, 3 relatively good lines that can cause matchup difficulties for their opponent and a 4th line that at the least is defensively responsible.

In the game being played today it is what we are seeing from the most competitive teams. Hard to match up against or shut down three scoring lines.

Some teams have 2 top line quality centers while others don’t have one top line quality.

Me personally think depth and team fit is valuable. Great to have guys like Coots who is so hard to play against while having some guys like G’s creativity. But if you lake the ability to roll three scoring lines and a solid top 4 D backed by a goalie that gives confidence then it will be a tough season.

I love the Flyers’ depth down the middle

Coots
Hayes
Patty
Laughton/ Pitlick

Down in the A you have the Germ who maybe ready to slide into that 4th line center role.

Down in the A you have a guy like Frost who has top 9 ability in the NHL (he may end up a winger)

TK was a natural center in Juniors but he is defiantly suited for the wing.

G is the best thing they have going because in a pinch you know you have a top line quality center out of him.

Not even debatable.

It will be debatable if Djokovic retires with more majors. Only 4 behind him.
The beginning of Fed's career Nadal and Djokovic weren't around yet. Djokovic has played his entire career having to face both Federer and Nadal.

And I love Federer I think he's one of the best athletes in any sport over the last 25 years. The way he handles himself on and off the court with class at all times. It's hard to be likable when you are that good, but Roger pulls it off.

Agreed. This is also the supporting argument for the Hayes signing. One addition has made us that more difficult to match up against. Of course this is all "on paper" still and we have to put it together, but I like where we are right now. A lot of people in here realized that we are better off with G at wing and, preferably, paired with Coots. Hayes allows that to happen while strengthening us down the middle.

Yes, we probably paid ~$500,000 too much and the term and NMC was not ideal, but he is a big piece of our success. And he needs to justify all of this by putting up a 60+ point season. Staying healthy and playing with JvR and Jake, I can't see him missing that mark. Seems like he may be utilized more on PK than PP but I would assume he finds a role on PP2.

I think it's questionable if Hayes is able to put up a point total that high. First question is will he be playing on the first PP unit? If not it will be tough for him to do so. He's a strong ES point producer but if he's not on PP1 then he will likely need to increase his ES point production significantly to reach 60+ points.

Playing on the Rangers top PP unit he recorded 11 points. According to ice time he wasn't on the Jets top PP unit and he recorded 0 PP points in 20 games.

Agreed with this. He can be very helpful for the team with his even strength production. Earning points is not the only measure to what someone brings to the team. Hayes can chip in with secondary scoring and a solid 200 foot game. Helping out some on the PK and just being a pain to match up against adds some value.

Yup.

Hayes' offensive consistency has also been a question mark over the years. He'll have to be remarkably more consistent to reach some of these numbers that ppl are talking about.

What was New York ranked on the PK last season and what were the tough match ups Hayes was seeing last year? Hayes isn’t an overly physical player, so how tough is he to play against?

I’m not sure how NY ranked on the PK while he was there. I know he played some PK under AV’s last year there and again some last year.

He is not overly physical but I have read a couple times about how hard he is to take off the puck and how tough he is along the boards. I also read some quotes from G and V on how hard he was to play against. That was when they first traded for his rights.

As far as hard minutes I only said that several blogs ago and that was in reference to what Bill said about quotes from AV as to how Hayes became a better 200 foot player as he beefed up and earned more trust from AV. Hayes was quoted by Bill as saying he got to play more freely offensively as he earned AV’s trust more as he played better on defense.

I think it’s debatable now tbh. Even with 4 less GS for Djoker and Nadal with 2 less. What he’s doing at this age is incredible no doubt. But the majority of his GS titles came against less than stellar opposition. Nadal as great as he is has been kinda of a one trick pony with the clay court dominance which is why I think Novak has a better case.

Federer has a losing record against both Nadal and Djoker in total and is 1-4 in GS finals against Djoker & 3-6 vs Nadal. 4-10 in total, not exactly stellar. With 3 of those combined victories coming when Nadal and Djoker were 20/21 year olds. He seems to falter often against these two in the huge moments.

Hopefully all 3 can stay healthy, and we can see it play out for a few more years.

All very good points. I think when all is said and done they will go down as 1 and 1A in either order.

He became a primary PKer in 2016-17.

In 2017-18 he became their top PK'ing F based on TOI.

The Rangers PK rankings:

2016-17: 79.8%, #19,
2017-18: 81.4%, #12,
2018-19: 78.2%, #27.

Does this mean that Hayes will be paying off hookers, playing (at least ) with pedophiles while ripping the franchise off?
I thought NHLers were honest, hard working and paid their debts, all in a most modest manner?
I would never want a player with the character of The Trumpet playing on MY team.
Maybe Poopsburgh? Maybe the Ranjerks?
Then my hatred (which is never just knee jerk) would have even a historical attribute to solidify the disgust generated by the POTUS.
How's that?
Political crap is always inflammatory. Relating it to a team I have followed since inception revolts me.
Please note this is not personal, no matter how tempting it was.
But this emoticon has seduced me for that purpose. is
