Hmm. Sounds like Colliton plans on having his own souped version of a line blender.
- Elbows15

Which is a good thing.

Lot of depth and lots of guys that can slide up and down the lineup - a luxury we didn’t have last season.

Except you run the risk of never developing any line chemistry and you have guys on the ice having no clue where to be.

As long as it not Smith, Carpenter or Kampf, to a lesser extent, doing the sliding.

If you think the Blackhawks are out of CAP hell, The Athletic’s Dom Luszczyszym would opine otherwise. His article grades each team’s current ‘Contract Efficiency’, which is each player’s age adjusted projected win output, combined with their remaining contract length & term.

It isn’t pretty. The Hawks get a D+, with only LAK & DET worse. His his analysis of the Blackhawks:

The Blackhawks are handcuffed by the de facto worst contract in hockey belonging to Brent Seabrook, who is somehow signed for $6.875 million for five more seasons. The mind reels. But that’s not their only issue. The Jonathan Toews deal hasn’t aged well (though Patrick Kane should still be a market value commodity for the duration of his deal), Artem Anisimov is closer to a league minimum player than he is to a $5 million one and Duncan Keith is firmly in the twilight of his career.

The defence is of big concern here as it was one of the league’s worst outfits last year and is rather expensive for that service. Improvements have been made in the additions of Calvin de Haan and Olli Maatta, but they’re neither the answer nor come cheap. The Blackhawks are spending the third most on defence (spending bad money on defence seems to be a recurring theme in this post), but are in the league’s bottom five at the position (also a recurring theme).

Aside from Erik Gustafsson, who provided big value on the power play last season on an extremely cheap deal, the team is light on good value contracts other than Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Strome currently on their ELCs. It’s all a mess and one of the worst cap situations in hockey.

Bowman on Perlini:

“We had some roster things we had to take care of to be in a position to sign him. Negotiations are probably going to pick up as we go forward here. I think you have to be patient with that. I don’t have a timetable on when we’re going to get him signed.

- walleyeb1

Basically Stan with the plan is to get rid of Perlini is how I'm reading the tea leaves.

If any of those three are the ones doing the sliding, we’ve got bigger issues

Last year the Hawks roster had a few players on their NHL roster that probably should have been classified as journeyman AHL players. This year Rockford could have a few players that could be classified as marginal NHL players. A small, but significant, difference. As a believer that the difference is razor thin between winning and losing in the NHL, the slight upgrade in the bottom 6, the slight upgrade on D, the slight upgrade in goal could be meaningful.

Versteeg is a forgotten man. But I think he would have to be added to the pool of about 12 guys fighting for a few roster spots. (Dach, Kubalik, Wedin, Carpenter, Sikura, Perlini, Entwistle, Highmore, Quennville, Nylander, Kurashev, Saarlea, Smith) Kris had 11 pts in 12 games after joining the Swedish League in February. If he is healthy, even if he does not make the Hawks, he will make training camp, scrimmages and preseason games more interesting. He will not go down without a fight (figuratively and literally).

- -Doh-

Vertseeg signed an AHL contract so he's not actually eligible to play for the Hawks eve in the pre-season (unless they terminate his AHL contract and sign him to a normal NHL one but they won't because contract counts matter).

I’m reading it as, we’ll give him some time to realize he he has three options, he can sign a team friendly deal, sit out the season, or if he doesn’t like those first two, we can shop his rights for something in trade and if we find a deal we like we’ll trade his rights.

Learn something new everyday. I had no idea that it was an AHL only contract. Thanks, LBR.

Dom Alphabet's an idiot. In light of some of the deals just handed out Toews' is hardly the albatross it was a couple seasons ago.

Keith could likely still be dealt if he needed to along with about 90% of the contracts on the current roster.

When Edmonton isn't included as a team with dreadful cap management issues, throw the article in the garbage.

And San Jose should be up the list too.

well...tyler explained it pretty well...

not 3rd line kinda guy
he does not have a role
other than net presence he doesn't add that much
hawks wanted to move the last two years of his 4.5 mil cap hit

- bogiedoc

Thanks. It was a good write. I like to hear various fans opinions more to get the pulse.

Most people aren’t. Being that most of those same people usually hate every move Stan makes...that’s kinda what has me on edge.

So bowman trades our 3rd line center for a 4th line physical gritty forward who can play wing and center. Um not a ideal trade in one observation hawks are going to be harder to play against smith carpenter Caggulia Shaw. On the other hand hawks are weaken down the middle with this trade. To win championships strong goaltending strong defense and strong down the middle. So now bowman needs a 3rd line center was never a fan of AA but he did decent job in his role.
