Use the Barn Rat, nobody knows him, and those that do give him as much respect as Rodney.

But he scores the points, baby.

So Dahlin isn't an exceptional case?

Shall we go on from Zadorov, probably Risto, Grigorenko, etc all coming up too early?

But by all means, let's pencil him in top 6.

- gcomella34

two of the players you mentioned here have a combined 716 games played in the NHL. I don't think they support your point.

Also, looking at Sabres for the past 5-10 years is going to give you more "busts" than looking at say the Tampa Bay Lightning for the past 5-10 years. One franchise can bring their players to the NHL in "sheltered" roles whereas others are bringing teenagers into the equation as saviors (Grigorenko/Girgensons being examples). It really isn't apples to apples and acting as though missteps taken by Regier/Ruff or Murray/Bylsma automatically means that Cozens (or anyone) will step in the same poop pile is incorrect. Hell it might be drastically different for Botts/Krueger than it was for Botts/Housley, we don't know yet.

If any of the kids can play top 6 in camp, pre-season, and through a 9 game tryout than I have no problem with them playing in the top 6 for an extended period of time.

Just curious how that makes you agree with his post in any sort of way. In fact, your reasoning says the exact opposite, that you disagree. What more does he have to prove at the junior level? 10 people scored more points then him in the W, and he's 3 years younger than most of them. If he gets a look for 9 games because he EARNED it in training camp, then good on him. If he gets a longer look it's most likely he earned it during the 9 games. Nothing should be handed, but to say he was just picked this year, can't play him just because of this is foolish. If he proves he belongs then he'll play. If he looks timid and gets pushed around, he'll be sent down.

I think we're arguing against points the other is not making.

My entire point, is a response to the article that stated he could play top 6 RW right now, if not injured (originally I thought it was suggested that he was ready for 2C hence the Mitts comparison, I have since corrected my error that he is not penciled in at 2C).

I am not arguing against keeping him up if he earns a spot, however, I believe the likelihood of a kid coming out of juniors that is ready to play in the top 6 as a teenager is exceedingly rare. So, he may look like he's ready, but perhaps it's in his best long term interests to reinforce consistent work ethic is required by sending him down IF he doesn't look the part consistently. I think overall stats are on my side that most kids that are teenagers don't come into the league and tear up a top 6 winger role.

If you have a teenager as a top 6 RW on your team, chances are your team is in REALLY bad shape or the opposite is true, you're so good with talent that you can carry that weight.

Bottom line, every offseason I have heard how X player will be in our top 6 D, or Y player can be penciled in for 15 - 20 goals and play the young guys and nothing changes.

VO has the BEST chance of making an impact this year but I think people are over valuing him because he's a new guy that represents hope for a perennial hopeless squad.

So, in summary. He can stay up if he earns it, likely he won't, so we probably shouldn't intimate he's a good top 6 option right now.

Stats sure do back up that most don't make it in they're draft year, and Cozens would be the exception, not the rule. But as Homie posted, ROR did it as a 2nd rounder so it's not like it's unheard of either. The part I would take issue with is saying if Mitts can't do it, neither can Cozens. I don't think that should be the case, as they're different people under different circumstances. Also you said you'd like to see him earn it in juniors (where he literally has nothing left to prove, and one could argue may develop bad habits as he'll stand out (And already has) against his peers. I don't know if he can go to the A, but that sure is an option that would help his development. And going with the theme of everyone's different, some do better learning on the job vs some get frustrated when things don't go perfect. It's up to the staff to read what's best for his development (And Botts strategy seems to be marinate the kids, which is fine, and I wouldn't be opposed to him going down)

I believe one is not allowed to go the AHL until they're at least 20. To me that's the problem. I understand that the OHL wants to protect their best players from going to the AHL and diluting the league, but people like Cozens need better competition based on past performance. So I'm pretty sure he has to go to Juniors or stay up. If he looks at all hesitant, juniors.

Yes, Homie brought up one of the VERY few people that have done it, but I tend to follow the 80/20 rule. People like ROR are less than 20% which is why I say look at a guy like Mitts who CLEARLY wasn't ready for the 2C. It's more likely that Cozens is more like that than ROR, not because of Mitts being bad, not because Cozens is bad, but because the vast majority of exceptionally talented teenagers aren't ready for a top 6 RW role. That's why, Mitts was a point showing that most aren't ready, ROR is the exception that proves the rule. You could name him easily off the top of your head showing how rare it is.

So, let's find out what he has against the most appropriate competition he is able to be around, which history tells us is probably juniors, despite possibly being ready for the AHL.

I'm not saying your wrong, except the most appropriate competition wouldn't be the juniors. He dominated as an underager. We'll see where he ends up, and you're not wrong in saying that stats lead to your line of thinking. Just need to see what he's got, and I think it should be based on him not those that came before.
