I get that, but to say the system is worse than any other professional sport is disingenuous. No other sport has to even contend with it to begin with.

The CHL/NHL transfer agreement is a joke. Has been for years. A team drafting an of age player should be able to dictate what’s best for the player in terms of development.

I'd have to buy a sword, let's go pistols

Sabres need to start fast and gain some belief next season.

So the CHL was worried about the AHL treading on them, but by insisting on dumb rules, they've merely pushed other good players to different leagues.

Fake news...

https://www.hockey-refere....com/friv/birthplaces.cgi

2 others from YT - albeit they sucked.

But still more than from Delaware, Montana, Bahamas, Belarus, Belgium, Brunei, Bulgaria, Haiti, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Lithuania, Paraguay, South Africa, Taiwan and Tanzania.

According to that website at least.

Oh, and where you came from doesn't designate ones abilities to compete at certain levels; although I agree with you that he needs to bulk up, but so did Dahlin and he did fine

- Whatnot78

Thought on draft day they said he’s the 1st player from the YT to be drafted that was trained solely from the YT?

That would be the difference from just being born there.

He always starts slow. If he gets 70 pts regardless, I'll be pretty happy, but I get it. It's not a positive attribute.

Could be. Also could have been because the other 2 on that list were terrible.

I'm sure plenty on that website were just born in those areas and didn't train there.

No he wouldn’t have. JB let’s players cook before they enter the bigs. Cozens wouldn’t have even got a 9 game tryout.

I'm not saying it's a good system, but if I also can't blame a CHL owner for putting the agreement into place, at least up until now. With other leagues becoming more and more competitive, they might have to rethink how they approach this.

The entire Byzantine CHL structure needs to be blown up. Between this and the fact that 1st rounders can't play in the AHL is dumb. Why not just institute cash transfer payments to allow players to move to the A?

Top 10 picks: $100k
First round: $75k
Second round: $50k

Etc etc. It has to be the worst system in pro sports

- jcragcrumple

IDK, but the requirement to be 20yrs old to play in AHL seems to be for the NCAA's benefit, so good players with possible NHL potential will choose college for @least two years instead of going pro right out of high school.

70 points and I'll join the sam fan club. I think we saw some (me anyways) some serious potential in the middle of last season.

Contract year, needs to be a leader.

Big year for the Sabres if he gets 70 points, especially on his own line

When did that happen? Nylander played in the A at 18

The 20 year old rule is only for the CHL. Other players can play at 18. It's a professional league, so signing/playing ends NCAA eligibility.

There's a loophole for Euros, not really sure how it all works.

I could be wrong, thought you had to be 20. Maybe just CHL players have to be 20. It's why Cozens can't go to AHL, and FL's Tippett couldn't go until he was 20.

Edit; I think it's silly to force a kid who's not quite ready for the NHL to return to a league where there really is no more of a challenge left for them

Adrian Aucoin speaking about Mogilny.

The former Canucks defenceman explained that Mogilny could pass as well as score goals. He also told this Mogilny story, which includes how he fared playing for Mike Keenan:

“Alex, he was not the most motivated guy because he was so (frank)ing good. He was so good it was scary.

“He could pass, he could shoot, he could skate, he could even play really physical. I’ve seen him bury guys in the corner, take the puck and go and score because he was pissed off – at will.

“(One time) we’re in the locker room and Keenan is all over him. We were like holy poop – normally he’s not on Mogilny like that.

“Mogilny looks up, he’s like, ‘Mike, have you ever heard of how I defected, how they (frank)ing threatened my family, how they wanted to kill everybody? You think you’re (frank)ing scaring me?’

“We were like, ‘Holy poop.’ It was pretty crazy. Mike didn’t know what to say – he normally gets the last word.”

It's a strange rule. It's not in the best interest of the NHL teams or the players. The CHL doesn't really have any leverage, so it's odd that the rule exists at all.

It's not really a loophole. If you aren't drafted out of the CHL, you have that option. If you're under contract with another team, that complicates things.

The CHL is it’s own league that runs like a professional league. They have drafts, trades, and I believe they sign players.

If they can keep players till age 20. That is good for them.

Like imagine the 1 extra year of Marner when he stayed in the OHL. I’m sure fans game out to watch him / his games.

That's the part that baffles me. The fact that the highest level of the sport has no ability to influence it just seems so... NHL.

The agreement was made when the CHL was by far the best developmental league in the sport by a mile. That's the leverage they had. Otherwise the CHL could make a rule where only players that were not property of NHL teams could play, thus leaving teams with nowhere to put their players that weren't even ready for the AHL yet. With the NCAA becoming more and more competitive, and junior-aged players able to compete in the European pro leagues, that's no longer the case.

Speaking of loopholes, I remember the Sabres tried to send Grigorenko to Roch on a "conditioning stint" and the league was having none of it.
