What’s considered a cup contender? Really, cuz I mean I would think a cup contender is a trek that actually contends for a cup and makes it at least to the conference final. This isn’t to be negative about the leafs I just don’t understand how they are a cup contender is all. - Oilersfyr
A cup contender is any team that has a realistic chance to win - you know, contend. Tampa had to be considered a contender going into playoffs last year. It’s crazy to talk about whether Leafs are or aren’t this year without knowing if Marner is on team and ready to go at start if season |

Is anyone knocking Colorado's chances or Tampa's right now? Nope. Marner will be signed. He has no other option. |

Time and again i hear that the Leafs are a true Stanley Cup favourite. Poop on Kadri if you must, but a return to thirty goal form will be hard to stomach for most Leaf fans. Especially when considering the bang for the buck. So with Barrie a UFA at seasons end, there is a real possibility he's gone also. How is this not a panic trade? Kadri should have brought back a D-man with term as well as some snarl. This short term thinking will be the downfall of this GM. Hunter is still looking for work is the response of many, so obviously we made the right choice?? He should have been the man in charge in the first place. The team may have a cup under their belt already. - Hardbalz

I dont see how the cup winning caps had a better d corps that the Leafs team this year. Care to elaborate?
at the end of the day it took both the blues and caps years to win a cup yet not affording the Leafs the same amount of time with this core. - systemtool
Then you aren't looking objectively.
The Capitals had a better goalie behind them in Holtby, for starters and they also had a top four stronger than the Leafs top four. They had a shutdown pair in Niskanen and Orlov, both play way better in their own zone than the likes of Ceci or Barrie.
The Leafs have D that can skate, pass and score points. But the majority of them can't actually play defense and shutdown the other team. Ceci is garbage and Barrie isn't very good in his own zone either. |

Dude. You wanna know what a cup contender is?
It's a team that was dead last in thd league in January. Then won the cup.
WTF cares what a cup contender is. its open to interpretation - systemtool
So if it happens once (and it's 90% because they finally got a decent goalie after years of having poop goaltending), now anybody can be a contender? |

Absolutely, see them quite a bit on Parry Island and at Killbear Park, dont find the rattlers to be aggressive at all. However the water snakes are a different story. |

so your whole plan of attack and the basis of your point is omitting Rielly and Muzzin. Cool.

Again, when it happens once out of 100 years, it's obvious that not everybody has the same chances or odds.
The Blues were a very good team for awhile, maybe even a contender but they always had one major weakness; their goaltending sucked. They fixed their weakness and they improved their odds. The Leafs have to do the same with the defense. Simple. |

Here's what the Caps had going for them: For once their core all played their best come playoff time. Kuznetzov went from playoff zero to leading the playoffs in scoring, Holby was actually poop previously in the playoffs, but played great. Same with Carlson, Ovi, ETC,.
If the Leafs play their best (And to do that the coach must play the best players a lot), then they can win a cup. They very well could have been in the finals this season. |

Rielly isn't bad in his own zone but Muzzin is definitely overrated.
But even if I gave you Muzzin and said he was good defensively (even though he kind of sucked last year and is overrated) who else can play defense? Who else can actually prevent goals? Are Rielly and Muzzin expected to play 30-40 minutes a night in defensive situations? Kill all the penalties by themselves? |

dubas is a retard, i have no faith in him. to date he has done nothing for this team aside from acquire jake muzzin and 1 year of barrie in exchange for 3 years of kadri. leafs ownership was targeting tavares since before he was drafted, so i don't even give him credit for that signing. |
